It's another genre bender, and this time iyashikei is on the menu.

i know this is very episodic but i feel like there is a 1-2 episode skip between the actual episodes, like at the end of 4 they got sucked into they hole and we got 2-3 slides of them jumping through somewhere and then they where explaining their transformation and sending them off.

i really like the show but this irks me, if there is a future episode where they have to go back and "fill the gaps" that would be awesome but i dont think that will happend

It won't happen, there just isn't time to have multiple episodes of them doing the exact same things over and over again in a 13 episode series. If those stories would have just been more examples of Yayaka and the twins stealing the fragments when Cocona/Papika find them then it makes sense to omit those more so than most other things. I mean there is something to be said for repeated exposure building up a sense of attachment to the characters but like I said you really cant afford to try to do that in 13 episodes. In a show like a Precure or whatever where they have 52 episodes they can easily spend weeks doing the same thing and only confront a serious plot nearer the end. I don't really feel like this show is half as episodic as you think though either, the main plot moves slowly sure but the episodes all tell a story that moves forward.

I agree, the time skip seems totally unnecessary to me and I can't figure out what they thought they were gaining by doing it. It doesn't imply any growth between Papika and Cocona because they seemed just as close in episode 5 as in episode 3. If the point was to get Yayaka a certain number of shards then they could have easily just implied that she'd already found a bunch on her own, or something.

I do not see what story purpose the time skip actually served, other than to be kind of jarring and make it seem like we missed out on interesting parts of what happened.

I think if they hadn't done that there would have been people complaining about their victory over them seeming so sudden, the fact that an unknown period of time has passed where in you expect them to have been training and gradually improving all the while makes it ultimately more believable that they could actually beat Yayaka only a few episodes later too given their previous incompetence.

Reading the lyrics of FLIP FLAP and Over the Rainbow, the following things are evident:

1. Shards of Mimi come from a box. The box is specifically mentioned in both songs. OtR specifically says that shards come from the box.

2. Papika and Cocona are the key to open the door. Well, this is what the story summary had already said, but again, both songs emphasize that.

3. The visible world is an illusion/dream. OtR lyrics pretty much literally say that.

Two stills, and they achieved their purpose teamed with the voice over this show has never spent very long on lengthy exposition and off screen events do not seem to be an exception to that. It has always been very lean in the way it tells the story, it is often quite efficient and deliberate even if slow paced. I think all that is really bothering you is that they showed you that more interesting works existed and you wont get to see them explore them? I can understand that, they look pretty cool and it probably would have been fun to see them explored, there are probably countless more ideas that wont make it into the show either too, but ultimately I think it is quite understandable why they would do that the way they did with the length of time they have.

Yes, it is. It's a matter of technical mastery regarding storytelling. They chose to do timeskip, but they did so in terrible manner. the terrible method is unintentional, because they lacked the necessary skills to pull it off. I don't know why you defend the timeskip fanatically. Why don't you ask the director then, if you really want to prove to anyone else that it's a deliberate and decent way to skip scenes? This isn't the same as all those people complaining not getting the storyline, back in episode 1 and 2. This is a legit criticism.

It should be apparent if you read the work history of the staff behind it. Small typical sweatshop studio, Good freelance animators, newbie director, untalented scriptwriter (she made a lot of flops), etc. It's like you've only been watching anime for 2 years or something.

This work should be seen as an interesting groundwork for their next project. Even Yuniko isn't shit in this show, so she might just be terrible at career choices, not necessarily artistically. Though the question of consistency in composition is obvious, since this show is all over the place with their homages. From it, we get the question of originality too. Also, about self-completion, namely if we can understand the plot without knowing umwelt, the work they're referencing, etc. Serious work obviously need serious assessment.

What are you even talking about? Defend fanatically? Accept any critcism? You can't hold one person defending one thing accountable for everybody defending anything. I can make plenty of criticisms of the show I just don't think there was anything particularly wrong with this or the way it was done. The whole thing about "you haven't watched anime long enough if you defend this" is just ridiculous and irrelevant too.

As I said previously the way it was done in my opinion served a purpose and served it well, its disappointing that we didn't get to see those worlds explored but understandable why we can't and the way they did it served to clear up any confusion that might of been there if we hadn't been shown how the 3 fragments were won by Yayaka.

With the rest of your points, I don't think it is really fair to judge a writer based on work on adaptation in the same way as work on an original. They are totally different processes which should be obvious. An adaptation is a process of slicing up chunks of pre-existing material and ideas and parcelling them into episodes. An original gives you the opportunity to express your own ideas.

With regards to the rest of it, I don't think the majority of references in this show are all that significant to the plot at all and if they are it usually in a tangential way thematically supporting character development or the part of the story they are trying to tell in a loose fashion rather than expressing anything concrete you need to know.

Oh lawd, you can't be THIS deluded. All the loose themes are loose, not because it forms a loose metaphors or themes. It's because it's episodic, but a poorly-directed one. That's why they "can't" come up with anything concrete at all, because it's all inside your own head. You're too conditioned by /a/'s bullshit speculah and see the show more than what it shows itself. There is not enough repetition, no recurring metaphors, anything like Tatami Galaxy. It's not a show like that. Flip Flappers is a magical girl show with some shonen action elements in it. That's it. The plot tries to unravel in a standard conventional way, but is simply too jarring in execution and resulted in a loose mess, where they have to cover it up in later episodes with flashbacks, as if they forgot about to add it earlier.

Just mark my word. If you really think this as anything more than a cute magical girl adventure with some bit of shonen action elements, then you'll bound to be disappointed. Let's see how it goes then.

I am not sure who you think you are arguing with but it isn't me. My point was that they aren't significant to the plot, as in they are things that have been put in a specific episode because the creators think they are cool and they can work them around the part of the story they are trying to tell that week and work well with that part of the story and by loosely thematically related I mean things like including references to illusions, theres no bearing on the overall show they are just things that are cool to spot and somewhat related and interesting.

I think there is a legitimate argument to be made that they should have told a different story rather than trying to fit too much in 13 episodes which shows poor planning and thus forcing all the timeskips but I don't think that given the story they are trying to tell there is much wrong with the way they have gone about trying to fit it into 13 episodes so far.

Just adding to this, purely speculatively, this by no means solid or thoroughly evidenced, I was thinking some more and to me it almost feels as if they initially planned the series as perhaps a 26 episode kind of affair. The way the plot moves so slowly initially as they tried to focus on developing the characters is something a lot of those longer shows do before getting into the meat and the fact that they have these apparent extra worlds designed that are never going to get explored. I think it is quite possible we will end the series with a lot of threads that feel like they were introduced and then abandoned or not really fully explored. It feels like perhaps they had this plan but could only get funding for a shorter series so have tried to cram the same story into that length of time instead of scaling back the story which has resulted in them being forced to put time skips in at every episode to some degree to accommodate that. If that were the case there would be argument to be had over if they had managed to compress that story well for sure but I don't really think they have done too bad a job of it myself although rethinking it beforehand to accommodate a smaller length would have been better.

I'm in this camp. Not to be an overly huge shipping fag (though I'll totally admit I am one) but I view this show as being centered on the relationship of Papika and Cocona. Each episode has developed aspect in various ways. Though there are some hints of potential darkness but I honestly don't think we're going to get too dark. Especially in the form of one of the main two dying in some way. to me it just seems silly to spend the show building their relationship only to rip it apart at the end.

Nobody claimed this show is devoid of any exposition fucknugget. People have praised the show in this respect for not relying on long passages of speech to explain everything but leaving things just to visual information or implying things in speech about something else. There have been timeskips between literally every episode so far. That one doesn't seem any more disruptive than the previous ones to me and do you even watch the show one PI per an episode is bullshit there wasn't one in episode 4 at all. Also the idea of focus continuing on Yayaka I don't follow at all Episode 4 didn't focus on Yayaka.

I explained that pretty clearly. You are extremely limited in what you can do in the case of an adaptation and the form of the telling of the story/what content is there. You are restricted to slicing up things that are already there into episodes. With an original you are determining an idea from the ground up, It's the difference between being asked to summarise a novel in 2000 words, making sure you communicate the fundamental stuff and being asked to compose your own 2000 word short story from scratch.

I think when Yayaka told them not to go in, I think it was because while the Pure Illusion they were in previously was just a normal Pure Illusion, going 1 step deeper means they're actually meddling with the creator's subconscious.
