It's hard to end a Romero-esque zombie apocalypse story, because there's really nowhere to go. The world is fucked, there's no fixing it, and any safety is going to be short term. The only believable ending is everyone dies.

With science-ish zombies (like 28 Days Later) there might be a way out, either with antidotes or holding them off until they all die of being zombie, but not with supernatural zombies.
