Walt Disney's "Steam Boat Willy" was an attempt to fill in the "missing" part of the story of eva between episode 24 and 25-26, with the journey down the riverboat by a cartoon mouse being a metaphorical journey of shinji toward the instrumentality seen in 25-26.

However Disney's original plan to release multiple "shorts" depicting what would eventually be shown in End of Eva was stopped by a legal threat from Anno and Gainax, so Disney had to spin off a series of unconnected "comedy" shorts featuring the shinji stand in from Steam Boat Willy to fulfill the terms of the loan that Disney had gotten out to fund his fanworks.
