Most of the screenshots you responded to were high budget OAVs and movies. In fact, most of the time people claim 90s had better animation compared to today, they're comparing high budget OAVs or movies to TV shows. Of course a 2 million dollar OAV episode is going to have better color and detail than a hastily made TV episode at around 300k funding.

This is what 90s TV anime looked like. Which still looks fine. But clearly you can find modern TV shows which look better.

Not that guy. But a larger area to see. Its the reason we used to buy widescreen VHS. Because 4:3 resolution would cut off 33% of the movie. Now adays, we get the same resolution of movies on TV shows (though not the same quality).

>>
>>149354806
>Its the reason we used to buy widescreen VHS.
No, the reason people love widescreen was that it looked more cinematic.
Cinemas had widescreen for a relatively simple reason: It was easier to expand horizontally than vertically (because it required higher ceilings).
It's marketing.
The actual advantage of the ratio (if indeed there is one) has nothing to do with this.

>>149354787
>Exotic
It was exotic when it was new.
>>

You're an idiot. Fullscreen cut off 30% of the movie, as I explained.

>>
>>149355009
>Fullscreen cut off 30% of the movie, as I explained.
People don't care. They care more about the format. You remember the DragonBall or Black Jack BDs?
They cut off the top and bottom because they know people love that sweet widescreen.

I just went into another thread and picked a relatively recent screen cap. Oregairu was good looking but it looks like they turned the brightness too high in post production. I don't know too much about digital, but it just makes me think they're trying to cheaply imitate the glowy style some movies like 5cm/s have.

Sailor Moon is cheap and simple, but that doesn't mean it looks bad. The storyboarding is top tier and the simple character designs mesh with the sketchy backgrounds very well, and it keeps a consistent pastel-like color palette which suits the subject matter and is easy on the eyes. Modern shows can throw all the fancy effects, digital colors, and detail into their backgrounds as they want, but without good artistic direction it's still going to look like a mess overall, and its a real challenge to find one that does things right.

>People don't care.
Yes they do. If they didn't care, then the movie industry would have fallen out of favor compared to the TV industry 50 years ago. And they wouldn't have released widescreen versions of movies at all.

>They care more about the format.
Which has moved to widescreen as standard.

>You remember the DragonBall or Black Jack BDs?
>They cut off the top and bottom because they know people love that sweet widescreen.
And so did ADV with the Rurouni Kenshin DVDs. And people complained, causing them to release them corrected. You're examples are extreme cherry picking and only prove that the audience does care about resolution and format.

Funny how so many shows tried to copy Eva, but were duds. Its not that they couldn't match Eva in popularity, but they were failures even when not compared to Eva.

Heck even Nadesico, which started off as its own form of parody, killed itself by trying to make the movie more dark and serious like Eva. Not to mention focusing everything on a Rei clone.

It didn't mean Nadesico as a whole wasn't popular. Everybody talked about it on the net back in the day, and Ruri was the one loli everyone obsessed over

Nadesico came out a little over a year after Eva ended. And was far and away the most popular show of 1997 (in Japan). Only eclipsed by CardCaptor Sakura the following year.

But I'm pointing out that it started off not as an Eva clone. Then tried to copy Eva with the overly dramatic movie focused on Ruri.

God damn 1995-1999 was a crazy time.

Panavision/CinemaScope was pushed in the 50s as counter to television. "Come to the movies, you can't get widescreen at home!" You had stuff like Shane being filmed in 4:3 and then matted to widescreen 1.66:1, and stuff like The Robe anamorphically shot in 2.55:1.

16:9 (1.78:1) wasn't really a thing until the compromise on the new standard sometime in the 80s. The closest normal theater aspect is 1.85:1, which is just a tiny bit wider and usually not noticed.

Pic related is also from a 90's TV show.

Notice how much more detailed and lively it looks despite having a similar budget to the likes of Sailor Moon?

A small budget=/=shitty looking anime. It's all down to how creative the artists can get with the resources provided.

What's distasteful about comedy? Also, one of the highlights of Sailor Moon is the reaction images.

And me picking out a high budget scene from the end of SS or Stars isn't going to be an accurate portrayal of the average shot in the show. The image I chose is far closer to what the majority of the show looks like.

I honestly don't know why people even bother to knock off stuff this closely. The only time in the history of media I have ever seen a knock off do better than the show it copied was NCIS. Saban had the idea in their heads that Japanese properties had good ideas, but Americans wouldn't accept anything that was too foreign. And they are mostly right.
So that's why they took footage of old Jap sentai shows and spliced that in with generic high school teenagers(with attitude!) and sold it as Power Rangers. That same technique worked with Kamen Rider as Masked Rider. I remember catching a few episodes. The Kamen Rider kid was from Pluto or something and gave a presentation in school about how humans evolved from insects. I don't know why that little bit stuck in my head.
Anyways, there were also Big Bad Beetleborgs and a few others that I can't recall of the top of my head.
It was okay to have Jap action, but they needed to be American characters set in America to make it acceptable to American palates.

>Saban had the idea in their heads that Japanese properties had good ideas, but Americans wouldn't accept anything that was too foreign. And they are mostly right.
It wasn't at all right. Its true that Americans wouldn't be able to handle anime outright and needed to be eased into it. But completely covering up and removing any Japanese influences was the dumbest thing they could do. And led to the anime pretty much being a fad. At least with the general market.

In order to get anime popular, they needed to embrace the cultural differences. The reason so many people were latching onto anime in America was because it was something different. Trying to reform it into 'same shit as on American TV with one key difference' is killing the entire appeal of anime.

Otherwise known as the general market Mrs. Clinton.

And also makes my point. The people on the coasts were the ones who embraced anime because of a stronger foreign connection. The anime 'industry' should have been using targeted advertising to get the rest of the country interested into anime. Instead, they tried to hide all Japanese influence and people just ended up thinking anime was a well animated but poorly acted form of American cartoons. With nonsensical plots and poor implementation. The anime industry died and those few people who cared about anime just went to downloading it for free.

No, they didn't. Everyone knew it was Japanimation. No one cared that Jap influence was cut out.
>The anime industry died
It was always niche. A lot of companies sprung up in the late 80s and 90s as it was starting to make it more mainstream thanks to the popularity of shows like Robotech and later shows like Sailor Moon and DBZ, but it never hit mainstream appeal. So Saban played it safe with the knowledge that the majority of American viewers want to watch American shows and so made everything as American as possible. 4Kids and Fox Kids had the same mindset. It's all committees and marketing pencil-necks who look at numbers and never bother to question the why or how and don't want to take big risks by putting out a Jap show as it was originally when made for Jap audiences.
That's part of what made Toonami so groundbreaking was that it embraced the Jap-ness of its products. Yes, it still had to format to American censorship standards, but it at least was the first major network taking a step towards acknowledging the foreignness of the settings.

>No, they didn't. Everyone knew it was Japanimation.
No they didn't. Even after it became popular, you had millions of people who didn't know where Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon came from. The people who handled those properties did a very good job of hiding its origins so they could retain exclusivity of them.

>No one cared that Jap influence was cut out.
Its eventual decline says otherwise.

>It was always niche.
Yes. But it was growing, as you said.

>but it never hit mainstream appeal.
But this is not true. It did hit mainstream appeal. There was a time, however short, when reruns of Dragon Ball Z and Cowboy bebop had better ratings than domestic animated shows and even major stuff (like ratings for Gundam Wing beating Star Trek Voyager for example).

The part you didn't mention was how a focus on dubbing, hiding its origins and a lack of variety caused this growing market to deflate and die. You basically had the vast majority of people in America obsessing over about 10-15 shows they saw on Toonami/Adult Swim + Miyazaki movies. And not knowing anything else about anime. They were reluctant to buy any DVDs except what they knew, so no other shows gained popularity aside from the occasional Ranma or Eva.

>That's part of what made Toonami so groundbreaking was that it embraced the Jap-ness of its products.
It didn't start doing that until it was revived. Way later after the anime fad passed. If you're talking about 1998-2002 Toonami, they did everything they could to hide it.
>>
>>149368711
>>149369160

Also, while I'm not going to claim that Toonami/Adult Swim was completely harmful, as it clearly got millions into anime, it was eventually the thing that led to the anime fad dying. As I said before, people would only get hyped for the handful of shows they saw on Toonami/Adult Swim. They'd go and buy DVDs for those shows, and nothing else. This would have been fine if Toonami and Adult Swim started showing more variety. But they spent basically a decade showing the same 20-30 shows on repeat. Always some form of a show 'like Sailor Moon, DBZ or Cowboy Bebop'. America grew to think all anime was basically the same thing, grew bored with it and quit. An entire entertainment medium can't survive off reruns of Cowboy Bebop for 10 years.

So obviously a lot of the things in this thread are not the most 90s thing. They are 80s things. The 70s and 80s were a very significant period for Western culture so the influenced spilled out.

The most 90s anime I supposed would be Evangelion. It has that repressive feeling of blandness that borders on dystopia the 90s had in reality.

>Anime artists never see real women and just trace over anorexic girls in magazines.

the porn from the 90s pretty much confirms this. You could always tell if the artist was a male or a female, because if it was a dude then the dick would be super realistic but the vagina wouldn't, and if it was a female artist the vagina would be a full grown adult woman's snatch (even on characters that are suppose to be young), and the dick would be some abstract art bullshit.

Hilariously, it gets more and more obvious the younger the characters are suppose to be since most of the people doing porn back then were college aged.

I forgot to say how much I love an prefer this op over the Japanese one in my last post its so good wonder who sings it?
>>
Is it just me or has anime left goofiness behind and become a (relatively) serious affair for grownups?
Even random comedies nowadays have some internal consistency nowadays while it feels like a few decades ago anime would get away with anything so long as it was funny.
>>

>>
>>149375038
it's hyporcitical at this point.

Look at the fantasy genre, it's full of people who shit on it for having shitty MCs, cringe drama(oh i'm sorry, i mean 'realistic'), and copy-pasted elements from video games.

and those are the very same people who will tell you that all the medieval-fantasy you see in the 80s/90s, is shit.
>>
>>149375038
I get what you're asking but I haven't watched enough anime to comment on it. I definitely enjoy those 'dumb breaks' that are more common in older anime.

It shouldn't be a surprise. Modern anime literally has an older demographic.

If you look at modern shows in daytime timeslots they still have a similar feeling. But TV is a dying medium, and there's less of them, and less money and talent in them than there once was(and they're not propped up by the otaku BD racket usually).

Two tone shading, hand drawn backgrounds, poofy hair, particularly large and simply designed eyes, greater facial deformation to convey emotions, vibrant colour palettes filled with non-natural tones, and prominent noses when characters are looking 'standard'.

There's a shirload of variance throughout anime shows from the 90s but nearly all of non-experimental stuff will feature a majority of these.
