As for the characters and uniforms, I think people just like to come up with their own designs because usually the novels don't get very specific with that stuff (Tanaka even mentions this himself in that interview). Probably the only reason the ships are different is because designing big complex spaceships is a lot more difficult than just deciding what somebody's hair should look like. Plus a lot of people seem to like these designs, so why fix what ain't broken.
