Jürgen had once said that she was the night to her day, that they were like the Sun and the Moon. She’d laughed at Jürgen then, saying that they were more like sisters then opposites. But as she grew older, she came to find it bitterly ironic. Now, there was a different sort of irony.

Beatrix Brehme was a woman of contradictions. Despite everything else, she was still the most beautiful woman that Iris had ever seen. She had once exuded confidence, power, and sensuality; yet men ran from her. She was terrifying, bloodthirsty, and sadistic; the perfect rabid dog of the stasi. Iris had once hung her head in shame at how she could have ever called such a monster “sister.” Now, it shamed her that she had not seen through the mask, seen through to the lonely, hurt woman who cried out until it was nearly too late. And it pained her to see her friend like this, looking so feeble and pale, like the melting snow in the trees around them.

She had Beatrix to thank for why she was not in a similar if not worse state. Whether on purpose or by accident, Beatrix’s Alligatori had shielded Irisdina from most of the damage.

“Ah, Iris, why are you looking at me like that?”

“Look, I know why you were looking at me. Looking at these.” She wiggled them. “And you shouldn’t feel guilty about it, Iris.”

“Is it not my right to feel concern for my friend’s wellbeing?”

“Heh, you’re so prickly today Iris. What, Eberbach been neglecting you again?”

She glanced up at Iris. Her mischievous grin shown to be a lie by her eyes. Iris met them with a neutral expression.

“But you know, I’ve been happier this past month or so then I’ve been in five years. I’m not going to lie about how everything is just fine. I’m not Saint Ursula Waldheim: God’s Chosen to lead East Germany to victory or whatever they’re calling her nowadays.” Beatrix was getting slightly too animated for Irisdina’s tastes.

It really fucking hurts if you conflate the end of Bea in Lise's with Iris's route. It's even worse when you realize she was essentially trusting Theo right off the bat. It takes a little more analysis of Bea's lines and mannerisms in Lise's route, but she seemed happy to have Theo around. And then he ends her.

No its not a retcon, in the LN Axmann agreed with Beatrix to let Lise go but planned on using Lise as a double agent to inform on Beatrix, which ultimately backfired on him. So you could say Axmann "placed" her there when he was still her "superior", as well as its true that Beatrix gave Lise the opportunity to get away from him in the first place with the promises of better treatment and a chance to save Onii-chan and get revenge on Axmann.

I don't think a BiS VN would be that difficult to sell though, and it would probably lend itself far better to the Visual Novel format then the main SM story just because the focus is much more on the characters, romantic arcs, and intrigues then the battles (just compare the translated portions of BiS to SM). There is also a much longer time frame (6-7 years) to grow the characters then there is in SM, and the cast is much more compact in general. Beatrix is also a heroine who could very easily carry BiS too. Finally, there's no anime to screw with things, so they'd be following the LN.

I would like a BiS VN, but then again, considering what they've done with Martyrs, it's practically impossible to reconcile the two now. People reading BiS VN would still see something of the Beatrix they read about, but Martyrs or anime Beatrix is practically an alien.

I just don't get how Kouki screwed the pooch on this one. What possessed him to turn his favorite SM girl into Wantanabe fodder? It's simply more insane the more I think about it.

The problem is that one shouldn't HAVE to buy all the SM goods just to get the right characterization in one VN, say. If we're arguing over this intensely over things, and we're rather informed, what about other communities and fandoms around the Net? It gets to then people just tuning out SM altogether, because it's an extremely inconsistent clusterfuck. I enjoy a mystery and an enigma you have to work to unravel. I don't like things set nominally in the same exact period of time and place and universe constantly fucking things up between each other.

Speaking of broken Lise, Healanon is a goddamn prophet. He did some short side stories a while back about a broken and mentally damaged post-SM Lise much like she is at the end of her route except she actually starts off in an even worse condition in how he describes than she is in the VN. Going through psychiatric care and slowly over time regaining more and getting better and better. "Lise is a Sweetie" "Lise Lucid" "Lise and Ursula" and "Lise wakes up" are all in that sort of vein. Reading that stuff after finishing her route gives me more hope in a better future for her, filling in the blanks and seeing how that sort of process could go about.

Helping Beatrix come to power and purge the DDR of Axmann and his ilk, and saving Theo and having a normal life together again were what kept her from suiciding a long time ago. Its precisely because of her humanity and her refusal to lose her true self that is why she continues to be in so much pain until the end.

The amnesia she receives when she survives may have been a blessing in disguise as long as she can recover. Its a chance to start anew without all the stasi bullshit lurking beneath the surface and fucking with her mind. The other side effects will merely have to be healed in time. Having a truly happy and normal life with Theo may have been impossible without the memory wipe, now she has a chance at a greater happiness then she could have hoped for.

Soldiers irl talk about Valhalla too, or mention it off handedly. So no it's not a sudden mass conversion to Norse paganism, but the concept of Valhalla has sort of survived over the centuries, because it has an appeal to those who are fighters at heart.

Cryska uses it in the 'heaven' context, said it to Yuuya because she knows him, and knows he will never stop fighting and is truly a warrior at heart, and she is like that too, so they can be happy together after the end. United, facing all together, forever.

Beatrix uses it more in the sort of 'hell' context, in that she knows she's going to the underworld for the horrible things she's done, and because she always fought and can never end that, but she knows she'll be seeing Theo before long, because he's the same way. It's sort of an insult, a condemnation on surface, but it's actually more of a compliment and a kind desire. She's acknowledging that he and her are equals, that they share more alike than he thinks, and she knows in the end more than anyone, he'll come to believe she was right. And it's also a wish to see both Iris and Theo again, in happier times. It's really sad if you think about it.

Anon, she doesn't hate Theo. She rather likes him, but at least for the story we know takes place, it's not really reciprocated. Granted, it is understandable why in Lise's route, since Theo was essentially plucked up while his friends who he was finally striving to protect and which he loved were taken, probably tortured and who knows what else. It's also some self-hate, getting to "live" while who knows what happened to his old crew.

There should have been a route where we get to see Beatrix's plan carried out, but funnily enough the Lise route actually works out the best out of all the endings that we did end up getting. Iris and Katia survive, Iris isn't in a coma, and they achieve their overall visions and move forward with Iris in charge and Katia as the people's spiritual pillar, while Theo gets to save Lise and help her recover somewhere safe where she can get the care she needs. Still Martyrs not at least showing what it would be like for Beatrix to get her way was a wasted opportunity.

The thing is, Beato, in neither SM, or Martyrs, or the LN, or even the goddamn anime, (at least as far as we know) ever actually expressed any dislike or hatred of Theo, which makes it all the more funny she's one of the top villains.

Again, regarding torture, she knows how bad it can get, and she would have been able to read his case file anyways. From dialogue, it's THEO HIMSELF who resents how "fast" he talked. It's always been him mad at himself first and foremost. Just as more than others like Anette were mad that he failed to protect Inghild, no one could hate himself as much as he.

Again, not only does she know how bad it can get, but Theo didn't simply sell out right away, he took it pretty bad before he started singing. And in any case, it was a catch-22 sort of interrogation and she knows it - they had ALREADY CAUGHT the Hohensteins, so there was really nothing for him to 'tell' in the first place, just admit to whatever charges they came up with.

For one, I don't remember it being put that way at all, WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THIS FROM, and two, Theo wasn't let go because of that. The whole time, he doesn't know WHY he was let go, since it was very sudden. It was LISE who made the choice to stay if Theo got to go free. Hence why Theo is in shock when Ax casually suggests a hypothetical, because it's then that he realizes that might be what Lise did.

Theo, after spilling merely said what they wanted to hear, i.e. trumped up charges and accusations. He wasn't actually let go until Ax took an interest in Lise and offered her his bargain.
