It's not anime-specific. It's an oldass leitmotiv of Japanese culture. Their mythology is full of sibling incest and so is their literature, starting with Genji Monogatari. A bit like Greek/Roman mythology and literature, except the leitmotiv was never broken by Christianity and kept appearing in their culture undisconstinued till now.

Of course there are some problems with sibling incest, but it's not like that shit never happened in real life. Royalty did it all the time, and obviously tons of mythology has it all over the place, not just Greek and Japanese. The bible included.
It's weird that a taboo developed before people were worried about birth defects. Now it's a bit understandable, plus you have shit theories from Freud about why most people are naturally averse to it, but fucking your siblings is pretty common to the human experience.

From studying a bit on it. It does seem that humans are naturally averse to it in the genetic sense. All animals seem to be. And with good reason. If we weren't, it would be far more common than it is, and that would cause serious complications as it will be continued very closely in the same family tree.

But because it isn't so common, it doesn't have so much of an effect on the gene pool to have a lasting effect, or an effect at all.

With brother/sister incest it's like, what? 7-9% increase in child birth defects over non-related couples? According to a more recent study. First cousins it's only a few added percent over the norm.

Seems to me it's been largely exaggerated of how damaging it could be. At this point, after trying to understand it some more, I don't have a real problem with it anymore if people wanted to pursue it. If it is parent/child, though, I'm still adamantly against that, as it seems abusive and manipulative.
