Except he doesn't mean what he says OP. He's trying to convince himself he doesn't care about people so that he doesn't feel guilt or sorrow. Thats what guts has been running from all that time.

And people aren't so predictable in real life either OP. Some people are fucked in the head even if their lives are great. Others suffer for years and still end up good although with some sanity lost.

Also forget berserk threads for now. Itll be nothing but shitposting until february when miura ends what is hopefully his final hiatus.

February? Man I'm glad I started reading. I'm midway(?) through FOTME arc and digging it. It got me in the mood for Halloween and even a little inspired to cosplay young Guts next summer

Miura hadn't thought of Griffith at this point, in its early days Berserk was just a serialised series, and Miura didn't know if it would get shitcanned, which is why the Black Swordsman arc is mostly Guts wandering around fighting monsters.

Noone is saying Guts is unnecessarily edgy, at least not people who have finished the golden age. But Guts IS edgy. Not the meme/buzzword silly edgy, with the fedoras and katanas and "this world is shit and everyone should just die" edgy. He literally lives on the fringe, from a multitude of standpoints.

Can't really measure Fantasia Guts yet since we're still in the middle of the arc, if even at the middle... but in my opinion he's so far been a little two dimensional in the arc. They all have been, by necessity since he is focusing on the island and pushing the plot now.

What I like about the Millennium Empire arc with Guts is how much of a legend / fairy tale he starts to feel like. Miura keeps playing on that card with the new group, and I think it feels very natural and creative, and gives Guts the respect he's due.

Black Swordsman Guts is cool, but it doesn't honor him. That's not who he really is. He is vengeful, but clearly forcing himself to be crueler than he wants to be. And that's great, that also feels natural and creative, but it's like a stepping stone phase - not the ultimate point of his character in my mind.

I didn't feel that during that arc. Do you mean the Conviction arc? That's around the time when Miura starts pushing that concept. During Black Swordsman it feels more like absolutely nobody knows him, just Puck.

Conviction arc is my favorite. Guts is somewhere between Black Swordsman and Millennium Falcon then.

Yeah conviction, golden age and black swordsman were berserk's best arcs.

And I felt that vibe with the BS arc because of how apostles seemed to recognize him so readily. First snake baron and then the count. And he easily became the talk of the town everywhere he went.

Conviction arc guts added to this by having guts catch the attention of the holy see but it felt like he was seen more like a madman than a legend.

That is a good point, but that is more like notoriety. Which is cool in its own way.

I was thinking more about how Guts's new group, and people in towns and such, start praising him as a hero. He becomes a spectacle and a hero to others, and a legendary fighter with a mysterious past that they are somewhat afraid of but also know they can rely on. That is even cooler in my mind, and respects Guts more.

Do you sometimes regret getting into Berserk?

I always avoided getting into manga with a serious story of hiatuses out of fear of getting hooked on it and having to wait months on end for every bit of plot advancement with no clear end in sight and an aging author threatening the very life of the manga itself.

I love this series to bits, but honestly sometimes I feel a tingle of regret. The waits are just too frequent and too long.

This. Most of the time Puck is a super-deformed blight on atmosphere and immersion.

Demons and monsters will be pouring in, and Miura will still decide it's a good idea to give us a HILARIOUS!!! panel of Puck, I don't know, picking his nose or something, while cracking a joke.
I wish he'd just stop that and return to being an actual fairy, a companion to the troubled black knight, instead of an annoying comic relief.

He did. He was a witness, he served well as the eyes of the audience, the one who'd be reacting to the carnage Guts left behind.

But now he does the opposite. Instead of emphasizing the atmosphere, he destroys it. The way he trivializes everything, how he makes every single thing a joke, it's annoying.

I think the same thing about a kid, although in a much smaller proportion.
At least Shierke is a witch, she uses spells. But the way they let the kid fight and still get out unscathed destroys any credibility the monsters have.
This isn't Naruto, these are supposed to be "real" monsters.
If a kid can get out alive it means they're shit, and some flaming dagger of plot armor+1 shouldn't change that.

I think it's still the same as before in terms of plot quality and depth, it's just that we perceive it as horrible because those two cancers are sucking all the atmosphere out.

Big problem with Berserk is that Miura added too much nonstop comic relief into the party.

I'm not saying to kill them all off like some "muh back to roots" fags want, but they need some danger and hardship to balance out the silliness at the very least. When was the last time Puck or Isidro were in any real danger?
