I actually don't. I remember ninjas mainly being a source of comedy, gags or porn outside of the odd OVA like Ninja Scroll.

If anything Naruto brought more attention to them, of course, now people kind of hate them in a different way

No, because nobody seemed to have an idea as to what ninjas were actually supposed to be.

They were used as jokes or porn in Japan until Ninja scroll showed up.

Naruto made them into magical super heroes and demigods.

Western media made them into jokes and canon fodder (See: Ninja Turtles, wolverine, the Hand, Daradevil etc.)

Historically they were just assassins/spies. No one ever took them seriously up until now.

There were quite a few cheesy japanese (and american) media in the 80s that featured ninjas with superhuman abilities, and OP as fuck. They weren't exactly meant to be a joke in that context. Shou Kosugi should ring a bell. Also Sonny Chiba did a few ninja films and a TV series, again not meant as a joke or pornography. 80s ninja shit was basically all about how badass ninjas were, even in the US. TMNT was not meant as a joke, and the original comics and graphic novels were quite violent for the time, something that couldn't be translated into the cartoons for television.
Naruto really did nothing to reconceptualize ninjas, other than perhaps reconceptualizing them as boring filler.
