How far have we fallen
>>
Just rewatched Serial Experiments Lain. Still God tier, gets better every time. It's weird, it feels more relevant and insightful about our relation to technology than ever.
>>
It's not exactly recent but a few months ago I saw Belladonna of Sadness (1973) at an art theater. It's the third in the "Animerama" series of erotic adult anime films conceived by Osamu Tezuka.

It's REALLY strange. It's about a peasant woman in some medieval European setting who is raped by the local lord, accused of witchcraft by the other peasants and forced out of her village because of it, and ends up becoming a witch.

I'm not sure I'd say it's good but it's interesting. It feels like a long animated 60s psychedelic rock video.

Are you guys trying to make this into a general now, or what? We had one earlier that lasted for ~20 hours, and another that last for ~40 hours earlier in the week. Give it a rest.
>>

wow thats super obscure, ill have to see if I can find a torrent

I also had the opportunity to see Belladonna at a local arthouse theater, it was a great experience. Can't believe it actually got distributed in the US. Anyone interested in checking it out should definitely do so, whether you wind up liking it or not, it's still worth a look.

Just showed my roommate the original Vampire Hunter D film

I really like the setting and character designs. I only have a dubbed VHS copy, but the dub is actually pretty enjoyable for the most part.

I'm thinking about starting in on the books. I'm definitely going to pick up Bloodlust soon.

Monster designs were also sick. Animation was better than I remembered.
>>
>>149138313

I've been meaning to take a look at that for a while now

It doesn't really interest me as a fan of anime, but moreso as a fan of the medium of animation, if that makes sense. Looks like a trip.
>>
>>149138313
I was really disappointed by it. I was watching it along with the other Animerama movies and I really preferred the previous two over Belladonna. It was so goddamn boring despite the great visuals. Though the whole "and that's how Jeanne inspired the women of the French Revolution" bit at the end did send my sides into orbit.

Started working on Turn A Gundam not too long ago. So far, it has been pretty good, but maybe a bit more focus on robots than what I wanted and expected. Still good though.

Also working on Saber Marionette. It's no masterpiece, but it's good for public transport. Not too serious, and entertaining enough.

Slowly working on Brain Powerd well, but will take some time.

Have had 4 episodes left of Now and Then Here and There for a really long time, maybe I'll finiah it soon. Have to do it at some point.

Now and Then, Here and There changed me.

The depression and nihilism is real.

No, the talent is not still there. Most employees are "new guys", and they allow themselves to be pushed around with braindead schedules and no pay.

Rewatched Trigun and flcl
Nostalgia is a hell of feeling
>>
>>149138068
Just watched the first two episodes of Flame of Recca. The first episode had outstandingly fantastic animation, which means it's probably going to be still pans and non-action after the first few episodes. But maybe I'll get lucky this time.

I've never understood the mentality of blowing your budget on the first episode and then having absolutely nothing left over. Rune Soldier Louie was the absolute worst case of this with how completely rock bottom the animation budget in that show is after the first episode.

Still, Recca is nice so far, but I get the feeling that this girl is going to get on my nerves with how perfect and bland she is. Gets stabbed and then apologises for being in the way of the knife, great way to establish a character that will surely be full of flaws and interesting quirks.
>>
>>149142623
You don't "let yourself get pushed around", either you get pushed around and work for nothing or you get fired because you're utterly disposable. It's been that way since the start and the eighties were not immune to this just because they had a ton of money to splash around on projects where the animators were allowed to take their time.
>>
>>149142589
I dropped it because of how nonsensical it was.

If everyone hated the king that much, then why not start a coup?
>>
>>149142934
Do you have 0 knowledge of human history?
>>
>>149142934
Yeah, because it's so easy to stage a coup. Even in history, it takes somewhere between years to decades for that shit to happens.
>>
>>149143054
The difference is that Hando is an incompetent coward who is hated not just by his commanding officers, but also by at least two other nations.

When you consider that alongside who easy it was for two foreign assassins to get into his office, it's clear that rising up against him would be child's play.

I started Treasure Island recently, and so far i'm up to episode 6 and enjoying it a decent amount. I'm not completely sold on it yet though. I dislike the lame attempts at comedy, and I think some of the characters are just flat out retarded (Such as Jim's mother), but John Silver was just introduced so i'm excited for what the story will be like with him in the spotlight.
The ED is excellent by the way: https://my.mixtape.moe/ytkeqv.webm

>>149144035
>current movies are far better at animation

This is literally wrong though.
Most most movies that come out today that aren't either Hosoda, Ghibli, Shinkai, or the occasional Kyoani, look like absolute garbage. There are some stand outs here and there, but on the whole, anime movies in the 90's and 80's had a lot more money behind them and looked a lot better. I wouldn't say the same about TV anime from those time periods compared to now, but movies definitely had better animation then, that's just a fact.

Speaking of Dezaki, I'm eight episodes into Hakugei Densetsu, and it's pretty great so far. It has the heaviest grimy 90s space future aesthetic possible, because space in the nineties was poorly lit.

It's pretty great, and Ahab's got charisma for days. I'll admit it's my first Dezaki show, I'll probably watch Takarajima afterwards. The tagalong animal kind of made me put off watching it, but I doubt it'll be much of a problem.

If I recall, the only interactions with any officer and him was with Bella (I think her name was.) who still adored him. Whats more it was implied that he was indeed at one point a capable and charismatic leader, I imagine many would stick around hoping for the glory days, out of respect for Bella, or simply because they no longer had anywhere to go.

And the whole why not start a coup argument was at the core of the show, or rather why fight? / Is violence proper to use in the face of an evil like Hamdo?

Our rambunctious little shonen shows up, gets himself conscripted, and then starts questioning why everyone was carrying on with the fight when they could just stop, and everyone he poses this too has some sort of justification, "If I serve I'll get to go back home." "I want power/an easy life." men who fall into the former camp would want to maintain order to get their promise (Even if it ended up being fruitless.) and men in the latter camp would fall all over themselves to disrupt any sort of rebellion in the hopes that it would elevate them further. Of course there are undoubtedly as many excuses as their are conscripts, but those two are from what I remember of the supporting cast. Both, again if I remember right, it's been over a year since I've seen it last, carry the cadence of 'that's just how things are.'

man I have a problem where I like 0079 the less I remember about it.
When watching it felt ambitious yes, but the exposition was clunky and the Tominospeak was out of control and characters felt very nonsensical at times, not to mention how wonky every other frame looked despite being pretty impressive every now and then.

But every since then and watching all the other UCs its grown on me; the story felt all the more multifaceted and the characters' motivations much more interesting. By comparison I loved every single second of Zeta and ZZ despite having most of the same problems amplified

I actually hated it a lot. Felt the characters were just off and the worldbuilding never really took off, it seemed really monotone and bland as if no thought was put into it. MC was the worst of them all. Main Villian was just a weirdo for the sake of being a weirdo. Lalaru was so bland and boring that i forgot about her everytime she wasnt on screen and her name was said too many fucking times. I enjoyed the heavy drama bits, especially that girl that got raped or the child soldiers, but all in all i didnt like it too much. Suprised so many people consider it a masterpiece. This shows biggest fault was really the characterization and personality of the MC and lararu.

But Akira the movie was pretty much shit except for its iconic animation. Might as well be a sakugafag if thats all you want from your anime. Read the manga if you want decent storytelling cause the movie had nothing of that. Animation wise there is a lot of stuff that can keep up with it and surpasses it. Animators can do stuff today that was in in no way possible in the past.
>>
>>149148481
Actually it's really interesting, and DYRL doesn't work too well as anything other than a companion piece to the original series. Hope you'll continue to give it a chance.

They can but they don't. Largely for budget and effeciency reasons, not because of missing talent or anything
>>
>>149148518
Very few things in the 21st century can really compare to Akira.
>>
>>149148549
Its decent but i wouldnt describe it as anything noteworthy. People who think the movie was brilliant are the ones who either didnt read the manga or were blinded by nostalgia and the superb animation. Or those that thought anime was just for kids. The only thing the movie did better, was focussing on the relationship between tetsuo and kameda and making them seem like real friends, but other than that it was just nice iconic animation galore.
>>
>>149148828
The manga is wholly irrelevant, I'm not sure why you insist on comparing the two.
>>
>>149148828

I read the manga years before I saw the film but I still think the film is great, so suck a cock

The manga is better from a story perspective but the film isn't bad there and makes up for it in astounding visuals

And what a shocker than an animation would be remembered for it's animation.

Well if its about frames than not much can compare if anything, but frames alone dont make animation a masterpiece. So there were a few movies that could keep up with it from an artistic standpoint. Like the ghibli movies, Jin roh, Steamboy and even those shinkai movies.

That would be too much work and i didnt see the movie or read the manga in a long time. I mean about 4/5 of the mangas story didnt make it into the movie cause they started producing it while it was still ongoing. But the gist of it is that the movie didnt really feel like a complete movie and was quite bland apart from the nice visuals. If i remember correctly we didnt even see akira do anything in it.

I finished watching Aura Battler Dunbine recently, it was okay.
+neat fantasy/mecha setting
+features both mecha vs. castle and mecha vs. real earth armies armed with nuclear weapons
+nice amounts of detail when the show features 1980's US, British, French, and Soviet airforces.
-terrible pacing
-terribly overpowered mecha
-terrible ending
Overall I would not recommend it, if you want to see some fantasy/mecha watch Escaflowne instead.

Dude you are so off.

First HoM released the episodes based on bootleg DVDs which were literally broadcast tapes, hence the shitty look.

Then they switch to the japanese DVDs of 2003 which were sharper in quality but had lots of print damage and for some reason they released them in squashed aspect ratio.

in 2008 the series were "remastered" and had better color timing, but they were DNR and soft as hell, to the point that might as well just been upscales of the 2003 transfers with color correction and downsized to 480p again (something similar happened with the saint seiya blu-rays)

Discotek now out of print releases were based on the 2008 DVD release.

Nope, can't watch DYRL without watching SDF. It's not a summary.
>>
>>149148518
>>149145543
It is true, and it's further proven by your sheer inability to disprove it.

If The Wind Rises is the best you can come up with, then it's official, there isn't a single anime made in the 21st century that even comes close to Akira and Memories.
>>
>>149171817
Yes you can, the original Macross was always about Hikaru, Minmay and Misa at its core, every other character was just filler.

DYRL centralizes them, and comes out all the better as a result.
>>
>>149171964
>DYRL centralizes them, and comes out all the better as a result.

DYRL is not a summary movie, you need to watch SDF first then DYRL after. It has it's own place in the universe and unless you watch both you aren't truly getting what Macross is.
>>
>>149171914
Not him, but I'd say Wind Rises is the same tier as Memories. I'd also say stuff like Redline, Metropolis, Tree of Palme, etc. are in that category.
>>
>>149172032
Of course it's not a summary, it's a retelling with all the filler out of the way. It captures the essence of Macross just fine.

>>
>>149172111
I'll give you Redline, but I don't think you, or many people at all, understand what went into making Memories.

To pull off dynamic perspective using cel animation the way they did is an incredible technical achievement. I know everyone raves on about Cannon Fodder, but Magnetic Rose was the most aesthetically stunning segment by far.

>>
>>149172377

>>
The Wind Rises is basically an extension of an older anime era anyway.

When people say new anime aren't as well animated, they're referring to anime made by the younger generation. Kyoani's films for example, aren't nearly as well animated as Akira.
>>
>>149172032
What about Lovers Again? For someone who has only seen SDF
>>
>>149172482

Isn't key at all. It's only worthwhile watching recently now because it's at least fully remastered and not in total shit quality.

For Macross just go through everything in broadcast order anyway, that'll get you nicely.
>>
>>149172478
I agree, but that anon's point was that there's nothing comparable in the last 15 years which is why I brought it up. Miyazaki definitely sticks to old-school ideals though, and it shows.

And Lyle proceeded to get nearly all of the focus, everybody dropped what they were doing to help him and his generic quest, to the point that Irhrie was barely in the final episode at all.

It's a huge shame, because it was shaping up to be something really nice until he showed up.

Here I was reading a book like a fag when an anon in another one of these threads reminded me I could be watching Chinese cartoons instead. So I downloaded Dracula: Emperor of Darkness.

There's one scene in here that I swear was ripped straight from the Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia. And another part that reminded me strongly of the Birds (but with bats). On top of the stupid plot, the English voice acting was atrocious. Highly recommended for fans of terrible old horror movies.

Can someone explain to me why we never got any of the Macross released in the U.S. after Macross Plus back in the 90's? I read contradicting statements online ranging from Harmony Gold hogging the Macross license for themselves and not doing anything with it (in favor of producing more failed Robotech sequels) to the shows themselves being expensive to license due to the amount of music used.

For a while there was a legal dispute between Big West and Tatsunoko, but that's resolved now and should have little bearing on why Zero, Frontier, and Delta can't be licensed since they're all Satelite. The rest is Harmony Gold just blocking it because they can't retool it into something neckbeards can't let go of. I know anime fans are a bunch of weird autistic fucks, but we're completely normal compared to people who still like Robotech.

I'm surprised they even haven't lost the Macross license to begin with. Isn't that a conflict of interest, considering the whole point of licensing your work to foreign territories is to get it published in the first place?

> I'm surprised they even haven't lost the Macross license to begin with
They don't legitimately have it in the first place. I mean, I'm not a lawyer and haven't read the actual documents or anything, but from what I've read they should rightfully only have control over distribution for the original Macross, but have basically acted on the interpretation that they have full IP rights for the franchise, and have enforced this with aggressive litigation until people just accepted it because it was too much hassle otherwise.
>>
>>149179758
If that's the case, then what would happen if someone who is too big to sue gets a hold of the Macross license and call them out on their bluff?
>>
>>149179758

What ended up happening is that they license over the name Macross and the other proper names from the first series, but they no longer have licenses to any of the designs from the 1982 series. That's why all of their stuff continues on from Mospeada, because no one gives two fucks about Mospeada.
>>
>>149179758
>>149179900
Actually, I'm slightly off base according to Wikipedia.
>The legal status of Harmony Gold's license to Macross is dubious. Harmony Gold's license for Macross came from Tatsunoko Production, but Japanese courts ruled that it was Studio Nue (creators of the series) that controls the Macross intellectual property. The license Tatsunoko was given was for international distribution outside Japan only, and does not allow them to control the intellectual property. According to the US Copyright Office, Harmony Gold is the Co-Copyright owner.
If this is true, it's even more of a mess than I thought.
>>
>>149180010

They are the definition of license trolls. And they only do it to appease 40 year men who still cling to Robotech.

I honestly hate everything about Gundam's plot in general. Every bad guy's end game is either dropping a colony or becoming an overlord. Not to mention the massive writing clusterfuck that Special Snowflake Newtypes are.

The one thing that I liked about UC was Thunderbolt which was only given 18 min per OVA. Fuck Sunrise

I don't know about the newer Gundams but as far as I'm concerned G-Reco was a narrative disaster and the MC was retarded. Don't know about IBO.

Going by some of /m/'s discussions of Harmony Gold, even Robotech fans hate them. Over a decade of shitty toys, botched game deals, constant promises of new content and failures to deliver, and abysmal PR has made many of them bitter towards HG. They probably wouldn't be in business if they didn't own real-estate properties, which is supposedly where they get most of their money from.

Why don't more people discuss 70s anime?
>>
>>149183082
Loads of anime have shit animation compared to Akira. That aside, Shinkai's latest flick is legitimately well-animated for once since veteran animator Masashi Ando joined the production as animation supervisor. His presence must've attracted a lot of top talent ranging from young animators like Naoki Kobayashi to veterans like Norio Matsumoto and Hiroyuki Okiura to the project .
