Vol 1 of the LN is more or less a self-contained story with all the main Aincrad stuff. Later volumes like all of 2 have side stories featuring the side characters set between there. The reason for this & Progressive is that the writer didn't expect anywhere near the popularity SAO got & Vol 1 skipped most of the floors. Progressive is what happened between.

The manga is honestly better than the progressive ln.

Like kirito is definitely better in progressive than in the original series but the progressive manga turns his dickery up to eleven.

And it's great.

But my point is the progressive lns aren't as good as the manga, so don't get too excited.
