I agree the serious parts/arcs are usually pretty good but they are best in small doses. If you go full shounen the show loses its ability to not take itself seriously which it desperately needs in order to return to its roots once a serious arc ends.

Gintama has always been the funniest anime by far, but it also manages to do action and feels really well.

I'm glad its finally getting the respect it deserves, for the longest fucking time nobody knew what it was or cared.

Gintama's one of the few series where the old "3 ep rule" REALLY does not work. The first ~20 eps are pure introduction and foreshadowing, without even feeling like that usually. 30 eps into the series, it's already pretty awesome, and the first major arcs really bring the quality and action to new levels.

Also semi-random reminder to ALWAYS skip the first two episodes of the show!

I like Gintama A LOT, but I'd argue that Cromartie High is just as funny
