I knew it was yuri but I thought it was just going to throw some eye candy here and there.
That it was going to be like a happy three friends anime where the cute little characters get killed.
I also liked how it all was fucked up in a cutsie way (I mean that the anime didn't change of mood or style during the grim parts, it stayed like a slasher film but made for little girls)
I guess it was bait and switch, but with a good teaser to mediocre.

I was initially disappointed in it by the end of it's first airing, then I rewatched it with a few other people and realized there was some really lovely animation direction in this one, regardless of its chewed in and out plot. I can say now that I really appreciate this anime for being so visually delicate while still being fully mature.

I ask of you: Are you fucking serious? Even without the symbolism Utena offers drama and even comedy beyond the level of most anime. The symbolism is just what ties it all together. There's plenty more in those 39 episodes + 1 movie.

Utena was a bit too long, penguindrum was a bit too long, this was too short, needed 16~ episodes for the premise. The other series as well could have been 16 for PD (stalker arc was a little too drawn out) and utena a basic 26 episodes (where to cut could have been doing more than 1 fight a week).
