Text cards in Monogatari style would work well, if they don't overdo it.

Talking about Monogatari, Shaft would be great for Punpun, because they've shown with 5-gatsu that they can adapt to a softer, more impressionist style too.

While I think that Oyasumi Punpun deserves much more recognition, an anime is not the way to go. There's some things about manga that anime can not capture.

Punpun deals with problems in real life in current times, with mature themes and a setting that are mostly exclusive to Japanese literature and a few films which are PG-18. They don't want shit like that in TV, much less with cartoons in it.

The last thing I can remember with similar themes is Aoi Bungaku (Kokoro and No Longer Human to be precise), and it was somewhat removed due to the fact it was set in pre-WW2 Japan.

I don't think it was a hit and nothing like it appeared since. Which is rather obvious, as not many present day anime or manga writers can do a story as genuine and as moving as Dazai or Soseki's for that matter.
