It's pretty good, but far from Kon's best movie.

I feel like if it wasn't animated, it would be treated more like the above-average late-night cable TV thriller that it is.

I didn't think Perfect Blue could be matched by Kon's other films, but Millennium Actress was also amazing. Haven't watched Paprika yet.

I got bored and joined an /a/ stream one night to watch it. I enjoyed it, but I really can't remember much about it in particular.

wait what, how does sunset boulevard fit this? I mean, "crazy actress/performer" fits them all but Sunset's plot goes in the totally opposite direction and focuses entirely on her personality at the point of her furthest decline rather than her fluctuating state of sanity over the course of a dynamic career. I would fucking love to see Aronofsky direct a Sunset Boulevard remake though.

Narratively it pulls ahead of Paprika at least, but mechanically it's his most lacking, for obvious reasons seeing as it was his first directorial role. Honestly that he could capture the feelings he wanted in each scene and the whole film throughout is astonishing when you realize his animation teams were all working shot by shot and scene by scene totally independent of one another and of the script itself. Literally no one drawing any given frame knew how what they were animating would fit into the film or narrative.
