An axe. He can carol the size greatly, and even the shape to an extent. He eventually is able to turn it into a guitar and is basically a dark knight/bard multiclass.

I would give him a completely bog standard service rifle.

He wouldn't be any special. He would just be another soldier in the middle of a war. It would be a character-driven drama based entirely around a platoon with equal importance, who aren't really any better nor worse than all the other platoons out there. They'd just be another cog in the wheels, and it'd all be driven by their personalities and the shit they do while bored out of their minds.

It would be punctuated with quick, brutal and intense firefights and the meat of the animation would come from expressive character animation.

I may or may not have been thinking about this for years.

How about iron man(ish) style MC - His home (witch was build on an ancient ruins) gets annihilated in a crossfire between The Hero & awoken\crazy mage\litch\demon lord\etc. Villain, nearly defeated, uses a forbidden artifact to nuke everything, MC as the plot dictates - snatches this deus ex machina in the last moment from the Big bad. goes Aloha Snackbar in the process destroying everything.

Fast forward 200-300 years, MC is found\wakes up among the rubble\washed by the river\etc. The world has gone to shit as all hell (and much more vile things) went loose thanks to that incident.

And here's the fun part - MC is a walking unstable magical nuclear reactor now. He needs to consume\add all kinds of magical items to himself to not fuck up the environment, go Aloha snackbar if triggered\etc. And so as a quick fix he gets full suit of over-sized steampunk-looking armour.

TL;DR
Magical power armour that MC&co builds along the journey from all the artifacts he finds.

cool idea, reminds me of the arm from nero in DMC
the only problem i have with the magical artifacts way of powering up is that it gives to much diversity on what the character can get (not like you cant have weird things on a MC but not that every ability is over the top)
if the idea is that the armor absorbs the magical energy of the object rather than what the object allowed to do, and the armor evolves by it self im on board with it
but if the idea is that the armor gets abilities from different magical objects that do different things is harder to give an identity to the MC for example like RE:monster MC
he can do so many different things that you cant be suprised to any of his achivments or new powers he could get

Illusion powers - creating things that aren't there, and also, in a way, confusing enemies. It could go as far as frying someone's brain out.

Then was is the role of MC in that case (heh)?

I see it this way - MC needs to absorb\add artifacts (with all their drawbacks) to the armour as radiators of sorts. (If there's no ventilation of magic, the suit might just blow up)

So the problem MC faces is not underpowerment, but the exact opposite of that - the excess of power, and very little means of control over it.

Say he gets the ring of fireball, puts it on gauntlet - and now his hand is constantly on fire (and sometimes explodes). This way the team of companions needs to ether work on a usable kit of items that cancel each other, or create a contraption based on individual artifacts (aka a flamethrower)

The only semi-original idea I've had is a size changing sword. Go from a pocket knife, to a claymore, to a bayonet, to a bastard sword at will, and anything in between.
