When an artist isn't literally starving, drawing yet another 30 page work for Comiket to make enough money to make it through the month, they won't produce anything of value.

Patreon was the biggest mistake ever. It somehow legitimized E-begging, and all concepts of work ethic went flying out the window. Hundreds of thousands of dollars a month are now lavished on artists, and yet the success rate of projects has only DECREASED.

I guess this spells an end to the glory days of DLsite. Why on earth would someone waste all that time working when they can put out the same occasional sketch they always do, slap a PATREON ONLY banner over it, and make thousands of bucks a month?

Obviously many will just stop giving a shit and their quality and quantity will go down
But there are also people who just do it as a passion and giving these people more financial stability means that they will produce better works
If they don't have to rush things and can take their time to make the best thing possible they will make better stuff
This basically boils down to, if you want to support someone through patreon, you need to be very fucking careful about who you're giving that money to, but the concept in and of itself isn't bad

The concept itself is bad. It's absolutely insane to think that you could give someone 10,000 bucks a month, and then expect them to sit down and draw for a decent proportion of that time.

Why would they? People aren't paying for the new stuff each month, they're paying for "support".

No country on Earth has jobs where they just go "okay, here's all the money in advance, it'd be nice if you got the work finished this month, but I'll pay you the same either way next month, okay?"

It's too generous. You'd have to have willpower made of steel to resist the urge to just slack off.

This isn't Kickstarter, where someone can take the lump sum of cash at the end of the funding period and run (or grossly under deliver) - it's a periodic/ongoing funding model. If people feel they aren't getting their money's worth, they can easily just cancel their pledge.

People are dumb. Once a subscription is started, it's very unlikely they'll ever cancel it past the first month. They'll forget about it, 10 bucks isn't exactly something most people care about, and when you have lots of people supporting you, there's really even less of an urge to work.

There are countless tales of artists on Patreon right now who do less and less work, month on month, and their income keeps going up. You have to seriously piss people off to start seeing cancellations.
