The vast majority of OP songs are utter crap. J-Pop was a mistake. Furthermore most of the ones that crop up in favourite OP threads are mediocre and forgettable songs that are only well liked because of their association with the anime. See Haruhi OPs.

Aria is a run of the mill SoL, its stellar reputation is built by waifufags who like to pretend they're not waifufags.

Mistaking defined narratives with developed characters as the only kind of substance and a necessary element for anime to be good is inherently regressive and neglectful of art.

I agree that most OP songs are shit, but disagree on that what gets posted in those threads is mostly on popularity. Drifters is not especially popular this season but has gotten a fair bit of attention because of its OP.

Additionally most of them have visual merit or mix the songs or visuals in interesting ways. Though I think the best measure of an OP is if it gets you hyped or not.

I unironically liked Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen more than IBO, Valvrave, Aldnoah, Ange and other recent mecha anime even though it doesn't have anything AMAZING or hypeworthy about it.

I enjoyed the island arc of nadia a lot because it got away from all the stupid captain nemo/atlantis stuff that I felt bogged the series down and became pure character interaction between the main trio

I don't understand this at all. Mono sexualizes everyone, males and loli included. You can call it fanservice if you'd like but fanservice shouldn't give or take anything from any given series. It would be one thing if you said you didn't like certain elements of the show but to say you don't like Mono because it shows a fully nude loli seems quite silly to me. I would genuinely like the series without any of the sexualization but lucky for me, I get to have both!
