Growing up I preferred the American OSTs. I still do to some degree, as they make a lot of the fights less campy and more theatrical in comparison to the Japanese track, which had a lot of awkward pauses. But at the same time, growing older has made me come to see the superiority of Cha La Head Cha La. Rock the Dragon and the rest of its associated themes are only really enjoyable out of nostalgia at this point.

Dragonball's ost though, was godlike in that it was in keeping with the theme of childlike adventure, and I'm glad Funi was able to keep it intact.

I also liked Yamamoto's score for Kai (despite the use of the same fight theme over and over) and the games, despite it all being lifted from an obscure Swedish band.

I think the old score sounds antiquated because it is antiquated. It's over 27 years old, at this point. Super and Kai had new soundtracks that were far more modern, including a hard rock song for Frieza that you'd expect to find in the Funimation dub.

I'm not American so I hadn't heard Rock The Dragon until like 10 years after seeing the anime in my own language.
I only knew the japanese openings because they were the intro themes to the videogames, and even at the time I thought they were amazing.

When I finally listened to Rock the Dragon as an adult I was flabbergasted by how laughably bad it was.
Actually, "laughably" is wrong, since it's not even bad in a way that makes you amused. It's just...low quality. Made me sad to think an entire generation had to make do with that crap.

Our version also got the original ost, so I was also surprised by how bland and unfitting the American OST was.
Dragonball is a prime example of why dubs can suck enormous cock, the only reason why it's not bashed as a shitty port more often is that people have watched it as kids, so they're less objective in judging it.
