And this is partly why the manga sucks. In the manga he's set up to establish a normal perfect shoujo relationship. The anime deliberately making it weird, giving them an awkward age gap and Ikuhara trying to subvert shoujo mores is much more interesting.

Pic related only supposedly occurs after the end of the manga anyway. It's the only way in which I'd say that manga actually handles their relationship better on the whole.
