While this is true, you can more often than not read the flow of the battle looking at who's involved. And while indeed, it's not foolproof, if the character's important and needs to move forward at that point in time, it will. If their story isn't dragged off enough, they'll just lose.

The writing was never good. What this manga always did well was the food porn and orgasms which were really fun the beginning. That novelty wore off a long time ago and now the authors don't now where to take this story any longer.

It's not a complex story but the melodramatic plot with central and azami has just made this manga unbearable to read and exposes the flaws in the plot. There is only so much you can do with this premise and Tsukada isn't good enough to write out a complex plot within the narrative. With sales stagnating and getting lower with each passing volume and the slow dipping in the ranks up to this point, this manga won't last much longer in the extremely competitive lineup and I'll be glad to see it go.

That's the manga other than the autumn election. Lessons are fail=get expelled. Hell camp was fail=get expelled. Stagiaire was fail=get expelled. Moon festival was go in the red=get expelled.

And for Souma personally, almost every shokugeki we've seen has been lose=get expelled. I think the only exceptions are skewer guy (though we don't know what Souma bet, I doubt it was expulsion) and the unofficial one with Tsukasa.

Most series that are based on a 1v1 format is gonna get stale if you don't change shit up all the time. Look at Prince of Tennis, even with doubles they had to basically go DBZ mode halfway through and start killing dinosaurs and POT was probably way bigger than Souma during its heyday.

Battle shonen usually work in the sense that regulated battles ie tournaments are sparse while actual battles are the norm so you get a lot of variety. Most of the variety in Shokugeki regarding cooking battles is merely unofficial shit or class room shit. In battle shonen some random ass nigger can just jump in at any moment and fuck shit over and people are allowed to do more than 1v1 at any point in time.

See, the thing is in most sports manga (keyword most) the sport itself isn't 1v1, it's team vs team. That is what harshly limits SnS because outside of classroom assignments and non cooking battle shit (which is not as hyped up or portrayed as important as the 1v1) you basically get no XvX variety.

I haven't read Haikyuu yet, nor watched it it's in my back log. But going by two of the most popular manga in Japan for the last few years, Daiya no Ace and Giant Killing, both do not focus solely on the MC and give lots of spot light time to the team mates, and also to the other team. It spreads the panel time around so you don't get bored of one cheeky ass pajeet.

You can't do that with Souma, and that really really hurts it as a sports manga because the match ups themselves need variety. Changing the cooking theme does not fucking change the fact that it's Souma vs Poo in the Loo for the 3rd damn time in less than 200 chapters. With team sports, you just need to swap a few players and the dynamics change drastically, and neither does the previous MVP players of the last time they played have to hog the spot light time if the author decides to give that panel time to some other guys.

You can't do that in Shokugeki even if you want to.

The promotion exams started in 172 and are still going; we are currently at 188 this week.

The question is, are chapters 135 to 171, 1 arc or 2? I think it's two arc personally, with the first arc ending after Souma beats Eizan and Erina finds out about Souma's dad. Immediately after that in ch 151, the survivor purge begins, and I think that is an arc by itself until the start of the promotion exams.

I just wish the whole gimmick wasn't lose or get expelled. The problem with this, unlike other shonen, isn't that the MC won't lose. That's fine. The MC not losing during actual important fights is a given for the genre. The problem is that the MC doesn't face any challenge to his values or things he holds important either or (in this case) can only pray for their success. If the MC can't lose a fight you have to make him question his values or his path (like he was made to do with the tournament loss which has the added benefit of making him actually lose).
Now obviously since his mates are generally PSD which has a strict-ish entry requirement they won't be shit-tier enough to get kicked out easily, but the fact that not a single person we give half a shit about has been made to fuck off (not even skewers, who got his expulsion rescinded) really cheapens the drama.

The TOC rankings for SnS have been sporadic, but a pattern has emerged. The starts of these fights against central have tanked in the rankings, usually when the author hypes up the central opponent.

The rank shoot up when the plot moves again and characters interact in multiple ways.

So it seems the Japanese readership doesn't like the boring start to the matches.

The sales have leveled out and the recent volume out sold the previous one when comparing their first month stats.

What I want to see is the aftermath of the umi's match.

That could actually go either way.

Most likely, there were anons proclaiming their hatred for the character. The match could have gone both ways, considering the stakes weren't all that high (no expulsion on the line if I recall correctly).
And that's the main problem in this manga, whenever the stakes are really important the good guys win every time. And the stakes are usually important, with Soma betting his place in the school all the time.
