Japanese pro-wrestling takes quite a bit from American pro-wrestling, so that might be why you think this series feels American.

Also, I can forgive the Tiger's Den thing since he is being trained by Kentaro Takaoka, the original Yellow Devil.

As far as taking it seriously...you may just want to drop it altogether. The training scenes in episode 3 are hilarious.
