From what I heard, it was originally suppose to be 1 cour+movie. When they heard it was going to be 2 cour instead, they basically turned a 2hr movie into 12x 20+ minute episodes. Of course it still doesn't excuse the fact that they could have use all that extra time to properly build up the lore instead of all that waste of time we've gotten, so I still condemn them for that piece of shit 2nd half and completely wasting all that potential in the first half.

Did the show even have that much budget? Delta didn't feel like it even had half the budget of the Frontier TV. I know Frontier TV had its QUALITY moments (and there were a ton) but Delta just seemed lower quality all the way through.

We have scans of the interview and it was posted here several times. It's confirmed fact at this point.
You can see it even from early production materials. You can find several different pictures of Thomas Romain's designs for Ragna, Al-Shahal and Voldor. And then literally 1 picture for Windermere. They obviously thought they wouldn't need to visit that planet.

It's still not an excuse. Plans were changed early into production, they still had plenty of time to adjust and write something good.

We literally have an oriental man coming over to dump exposition that takes one full episode just because the script was so bad the weren't able to sprinkle that all over the show. A "triangle" that never felt like a triangle, I'm not a Miragefag, but she could've just not existed and the puppy love between Hayate and Freyja would be the same. Main reason for Roid doing shit was "muh short lifespan" and then being killed by homo childhood friend.

Back in the first half of Delta, when I was super into it, I was 100% ready to buy the blu-rays. I was about to preorder and everything but then I remembered Aquarion Evol, another show I was considering buying the blu-rays for before it went to shit, and decided not to. The stakes were raised, but everything just stopped happening. In the first cour, Mikumo was pushing Freyja forward, they were going on missions, both halves of the cast were in constant contact, but in part 2, everyone just sat around in the macross and windnigger land talking.

Also, I liked mirage from the start, but why was she even in the show? Why was she billed as a main?

I'll repost a picture I made before the last episode. It's from Delta's jp wiki page. Song usage shows all the difference between the the first and second half. First half was full of action scenes and Walkure assault concerts with new song almost in every episode. Something was happening in every episode and characters had to react to it.

This picture misses episode 26. You can add Bokura no Senjou (1st half), Girafe Blues (1st half), Ichido Dake (1st half again) and then Novatic (finally a song from 2nd half but also one of the worst ones).

I actually didn't mind the first 2/3 of Delta. Sure, there was less action, but things still happened. I actually thought it would rev up after Mikumo resonated with the ruins (ep.18?). Hell, I still liked the Berger exposition episode because of all the references.

After that, though, it was just incredibly boring. The funny thing is, the last episode still managed to feel rushed despite all the setup going there.

Everything ended up being dumped in mass while several episodes were just wasted. It ended up making things feel like nothing was happening when everything was.

The most criminally underused asset was Mikumo. She went from weird singer who might be the villain to oddly okay with things clone to a superweapon that could end the galaxy in five minutes if she felt like it. In the span of four episodes. There was no time for us to process any of that. Still best girl with best singing voice.

Mirage didn't really get any development stuck in some strange limbo of her crush on Hayate to trying to be a better pilot, and neither panned out.

Lady M was apparently Minmei? That sure was an interesting plot point that went nowhere.

Why did Makina and Chuck's sister both survive?

Was Roid trying to kill Heinz? What was with the doctor thing?

But there is another question. Jellyfish festival (episode 10) was in September. Ragna was attacked just few days after that. Freyja's birthday (episode 16) was on November 3rd. And at the very minimum one or two weeks passed between episodes 16 and 26. We have more at least 2 full months from episode 13 to 26. How the fuck is Chuck's sister still in bandages? It never takes more than a month for a broken arm to heal naturally. And it's Macross, they must have some futuristic regenerative technologies there.
