There's nothing wrong with Asuna, people just hate Gary Stu since he doesn't rebuff other girls hanging off him.

That's why people can appreciate Syaoran, but not 'too popular' SAO that was obviously a teenage wish fulfilment story, which triggers anyone over 18 who like anime.
Her design is perfect waifu material, and the author knows it, problem is as the harem number 1 it's ultimately unrealistic of her representation as a girl, not dealing with rivals / lack of radar, i.e the problem with not dealing with harem relationships since the original material is grounded in life / death themes that got strung along.
