How did this get animated in the first place? I was surprised the whole time watching the show. I was like the MC when I was a kid and still am to some degrees. To grade this show

Yup! They have a mixed bag collection of over 70 series and around 70 OVAs/movies of Prime eligible anime. In the last 3 seasons they've picked up one series to simulcast and this season its 'Fune wo Amu'. Previously those were 'KABANERI OF THE IRON FORTRESS' and 'BATTERY the animation'.

OK, holy shit but what are they doing with the animation? Because whatever it is, it's working for me. So many subtle gestures in hand and face movements, like if someone's twitching or nodding their head, you can see it in the animation very clearly. That's not something you expect with an artstlye so realistic. Animation is definitely very free flowing, are they using rotoscoping or something?
As for direction, man the presentation was very strong, so was the storyboarding. It's subtle framing that captures the right amount of information at the right angle without becoming overly pretentious (looking at you Orange and Hamasaki).
Also really lived both EP and ED, this has potential to be AOTS and can be a contender for AOTY with Genroku, it needs to keep up with the production details, solid direction and solid acting.
I really hope production doesn't go down the drain few episodes I'm, but considering it is only 11 episodes long, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I actually liked this a lot. The animation was much better than I expected, and the atmosphere was so nice and relaxed.
