Zeon was a cluster of colonies known as side 3 that declared itself independant of the Earth Federation and was subsequently embargoed and refused trade with any EF controlled colony (All of them until side 6 also split off). Zeon developed a new weapon known as the mobile suit and declared war on the EF, starting it off by dumping deadly nerve gas into dozens of EF colonies across multiple Sides, then strapping big rocket thrusters to one and shooting it at the earth and trying to hit the Earthside EFF headquarters with it.

The EFF managed to crack it apart but intead of one big drop it broke it into smaller chunks, the largest section flying around the earth scattering debris everywhere and fucking up a large portion of North America before hitting Sidney and sinking it it into the ocean.

Zeon attempted to mount rockets and perform a second drop at Side 4 but the EF fleet intercepted and the fighting completely destroyed side 4. The drop was stopped but the EFF fleet got decimated by Zeons MS in the process.

Oh, and I should mention that Zeon is led by the Zabi family, who hijacked the Zeon movement in Side 3 by assassinating the former leader and founder. Also the kill count of soldiers and civilians combined was in the billions after the first month of the war and by the end of the war like half the human population was dead.

The green and white MS from the beginning is a GM. Its a sort of mass production model of the original RX-78 gundam (Not Io's Full Armor Gundam) and it has a shit ton of variants due to being so modular.

Io's GM Kai is pic related. The Kai is an upgraded model of GM made ofter the war and built more for ground combat rather than space.

The Zeon group we see in Thunderbolt is a bunch of guys who got the short end of the stick in the war and screwed over by their leaders.

The EF group is a group mad as fuck over the destruction of their home colonies by zeon and are being used by the EFF leaders as expendables to clear the thunderbolt sector not to cut of a zeon supply route like the brotherhood beleive, but to clear a path for the main fleet to secretly use as a sort of backdoor on the orbital path to sneak up on A Baoa Qu. The anime ommitted the scene where this is revealed.

Most of the early UC stuff, outside of Unicorn, don't have stupidly OP MC's, even Amuro needed to git gud before he became the White Devil.
Uso from Victory is a god of death but in his case it's more down to quick thinking and catching his enemies off guard than blatant plot armour.
G is a kung fu movie in the form of a gundam series, everyone is OP in it.
Wing and SEED MC's have full plot armour all the time.
00 actually explains why the MC is untouchable for the first half of S1 then has him get rekt by the end but S2 shits all over that though.

Keep in mind that the entire war takes place within a year and the events of thunderbolt take place in the final few weeks before Zeon's surrender.

In the first half of the war the EF had no MS and were holding Zeon off by throwing sheer numbers at them. The EF started "Project V" to reverse engineer Zakus and develop a superior MS of their own which results in the RX-78 line of gundams. The colony where the gundam is being developed is attacked and a civilian teen named Amuro Ray ends up piloting the gundam and repelling the attack.

He eventually gets drafted as the official pilot and ends up being so skilled and gets such a high kill count that Zeon calls him the "White Devil". Some pilots are so scared of facing him that the EF outfitted some of their GMs with gundam-like heads for psychological warfare purposes.

I wouldn't be surprised if the gundam (And Amuro) were used for propaganda and recruitment purposes.

The Origin manga is an alternate retelling of the OYW and original series with a few tweaks to the setting, story, characters, and designs. Plus it includes almost 3 volumes worth of flashback chapters chronicling the events that led up to the war and early stages of the war told mostly through Char and Sayla's view. Great manga series. Unless you buy its official hardbacks though you will have to wait for the officially licensed free online release to be completed because nobody wanted to rip apart their hardbacks to scan and upload them.

The Origin OVAs just cover the flashback chapters and are relatively light on MS action overall.
