Problem was first episodes were so bad that lot of people droped Asterisk. A pity because by episode 8 or so is already superior to Rakudai. And we got an entire aditional season.

Rakudai, easily. The artistic direction was surprising with unexpected effects like aspect-ratio-destroying-chan and some shaft-like backgrounds. The story felt like the author wanted you to believe this was a generic harem battle tournament anime, but then turned the premise on its head by killing any harem possibility right at the start. I also had no difficulty to believe that MC was actually a BAMF, which is pretty rare nowadays.

Ouka is the defacto main girl. Her development was stretched so it could span across the story, meaning rather than having it resolved in a couple of volumes, it was cut up and spread across here and there. She has have an edge in having the heaviest "burden" that resonated with Takeru the most.

After the magic world arc, Mari often was in the back, but would come out in the spotlight when it's to kick ass or support Takeru. She didn't need more development since her character arc was completed. I prefer most of her scenes with Takeru more than Ouka for a few reasons, one being she's cuter and another I like her teasing playfulness. Plus, the time spent with Takeru in the magic world arc that gave Takeru a new perspective about witches and magic in general and her being there to guide/comfort him was nice.

Eh, I'd say Mari is only behind Ouka who had the whole partners thing down. Mari is always affectionate after her arc and butt heads with Ouka the most. Lapis is close and all, but Takeru treats her like a precious daughter/imouto. With Usagi, it's more like a really good friend. And Ikaruga is the caring onee-san that often jokes about with sexual advances, but she's the type who looked after Takeru and the rest more than trying to compete in the harem race.
