funny coincidence. I just finished s6 yesterday evening, watching the series for the first time.

I'd say Gintama kinda suffers of many small things. It's never been marketed as strongly as the other "big three". On the surface, it may seem like another Bleach / Naruto clone (was guilty of this prejudice myself). While a pretty good comedy, some jokes will obviously fly over normie's heads. And finally, the beginning of the series really did not leave too good of an impression; I recall watching ep1 already years ago, feeling it to be merely "meh", and just putting it down to watch some other big series at the time.

Just recently I noticed people mention the series again, even plain out suggesting to skip the first two, filler-tier eps, and give it a much longer shot than the typical "3 episode rule". And as you may expect, I was quite damn hooked after a while.

Now that we have that wall'o'text out of the way, can we discuss who's the best girl, and why is it Kagura?

I don't know if it's because /a/ has been invaded by newfags, if it's because some fans were turned off by the high amount of serious arcs lately, or a combination of both. At the very least, I think it was a mistake for the latest season to skip lots of funny chapters just to get to the big serious arc. I can't believe they skipped the Excalibur and Love Potion arc. They're doing Love Potion as OVA at least, but it really should have been in the series.

Kek, you don't get what a parody is? I bet yo did it after 50 chapters. The point about Sorachi is that he wanted to do a funny shonen, not an anti-shonen or a funny seinen; so he often deforms the clichés for the sake of fun, but at the same time he rarely criticizes those clichés. He knows they are stupid enough but it seems people are not really aware of it.

Gintama was always the best when it got bits of the cast doing silly nonsenical things together (e.g the internet cafe episodes). The serious arcs from Yoshiwara onwards ruined the series forever with the exception of a few funny episodes here and there.

I understand this sentiment and I'd agree if most of them weren't so hamfisted, forced and pretty poorly done in general.

Examples of at least half-decent "serious" Gintama arcs are Benizakura (which actually played off the premise and existing main cast) and the Shinsengumi Crisis which was an excellent mix of stupid comedy and some drama that showed us the bonds of the Shinsengumi.

Been saying it to people considering starting Gintama for the first time: give it at least 20 to 25 episodes!

If it doesn't even slightly tickle your interests and start to warm up to you, then you may consider dropping it. Another 20 or so episodes in, and I was severely hooked.

It's drawn out, sometimes its super serious sometimes it's flat out retarded. I marathoned chapters 1-590 but haven't bothered to keep up with the weekly updates since. Zura on standby is the best gag in the whole series.

Gintama already lost what little charm it had.

I enjoyed the first season, but I found it very hard to wade through all the filler episodes.
I wish there was some guide that would list all the plot relevant episodes.

newsflash: besides episodes 1 and 2, there are no "fillers" in Gintama anime.

Some fucking insignificant detail or character in one of those more SOL-focused episodes may end up being quite significant down the line.

I think I was lucky to first see the series out of order when I watched someone livestreaming random episodes.

I've heard the beginning of it can turn people off. It's got a great cast but it takes awhile for many of them to be introduced.

It kinda became edgy and disgusting since the author ran out of ideas plus the last arc is literally trash. Every chapter is the exact same and the universe wasn't developed enough for anyone to care. We literally knew next to nothing about the final arc enemies before the arc,

Lets not even mention the constant asspulls, biggest offender is the sensei being alive. army wise the final enemies were supposed to be massive and yet they keep losing when the ratio is like 1000: 1.

the first 2 seasons were glorious after that it went downhill excpet for a few arcs.
