Happened to me with Nadesico.
Another case would be Combattler V, but i stopped watching it since I heard that the second part was shit.

Ignore /m/, the second half maybe corny but it's not that bad. Plus there was an episode where the villains separate a mom and child monster which look like Godzilla, it's a big tearjerker. That and Dungle is a pretty funny guy.
