The author likes Emilia too much but the reason Rem was put into a coma is pretty clearly because she had a huge head start and her love was shown to be requited multiple times after her confession in the novels. Emilia would have "lost" in that she still doesn't love Subaru by the end of arc 3 and Rem would have weened Subaru off his Emilia obsession over time if she were around. Now that the story is on it's 6th arc it's definitely not as one sided.
