The manga ending was way better than the anime ending, there were some real feels. Anime ending just feels stale.

Disagree. I find both endings thrilling as fuck. Manga ending is more canon, obviously, and closed themes of 'Kira' worldwide influence and words of Ryuk about Light being the last one whose name will be in Death note pretty humilating in front of everyone.
Anime ending was sort of expanded about Light's realisation of everything he did and uncomfortable death with hallucinations in the end.

went to shit after L finally died

Death Note started as a 10/10
Then Misa came along and it became a 6/10.
During the Higuchi arc it fell to a 5/10.
Then L died and it became a 4/10.

Misa and Rem are some of the most annoying characters in all of fiction.
