If it is considered a masterpiece then there is obviously something to learn from it, be it historical significance in the history of anime or pioneering animation techniques and seeing the origins of a certain form of story telling.

So while not all of them may be "enjoyable" in a sense it's not like I regret watching them because atleast at the end of the day I am more informed about the hobby that I enjoy. And I'd say being an anime fan entails knowing a lot about anime right?

There are some things I was forced to watch simply by my own constraints.

I plan on watching everything KyoAni, SHAFT, and everything that aired on the Noitamina block (save that one live action thing).

Absolutely dreaded watching Munto, it wasn't TERRIBLE, it's just unthinkable to have to watch the same story 2 and a half times.

What a steaming pile of fucking bullcrap, I get put on to this by friends who introduced me to anime before that I've adored, they sell it too me as a brilliant comedy and emotionally touching piece. What a fucking let down.

It was a mess, an utter mess, a train wreck that was amusing to watch for the first episode but after that you realise you're just staring at an already crashed train.

The main girl and the black haired one of the two side girls are the most insufferable pieces of shit, they are nothing but arseholes to the teacher, one sexually harassing him and using societal conventions and the fact she'd automatically be believed out of the two to get away with it, while the black haired one is physically violent with him over pointless things, in a way that never amounts to being amusing or tsundere or anything.

These elements are clearly supposed to be comical, but instead the show takes its self so bloody seriously at some points that there is a complete dissonance in everything about it, the 8 year old little shits acting like selfish, annoying adults over talking about their problems half the time gets grating on its own because if they weren't such shits about it and didn't give their teacher such a ridiculously un-funny hard time then, fuck I don't know, the show wouldn't have had so much bullshit got damn drama.

The worst part is, fuck it, I'd be down for an anime about a younger person falling for their teacher, 8 is stretching it maybe but it's fiction so I don't care that much, but this show constantly stepped on its own foot again and again in trying to be comedy because of the disconnectedly serious tone it took, and stopped the serious moments feeling like anything but contrived shite because of mediocre writing/use of cliches and heavily comedic slapstick tone it took the rest of the time.

Comedy and drama can be blended well and have been before, but this show didn't have a clue how.

Forced myself to watch K-On 2 because a concept of dropping was unknown to me at that time.

Most of the early UC OVAs are interesting in various ways, but I don't know how much my watching them was enhanced by being into the world thanks to having seen the original UC shows. Gundam as a whole to me has come to be mostly a worldbuilding show, which sounds odd considering it's about giant humanoid robots which logically shouldn't be efficient anywhere, but still.
War in the Pocket is probably the most consistently good of the OVAs, the others tend to fall apart in the second half, but are still interesting. 0083's first half to me is the perfect Gundam setup with all the usual elements but really well executed and with great style and visual directing. Sadly the second half has some writing misses. 08th MS Team has a shit story with plot armor but nice atmosphere. Unicorn is amazingly pretty and is mostly decent in terms of story, but heavily banks on the viewer's knowledge of the setting.
All in all I'd recommend watching Thunderbolt. It looks great, sounds great, wastes no time and is consistently interesting.
The best way would still of course be to just start at the beginning and watch all of UC, and then branch out into alternate universes, but you asked for shorter ones so here we go.

There's a lot of shows I hated at some point or another, but usually they ended up getting better. I had a LOT of trouble finishing the last 2 episodes of NGE, but upon rewatch and watching EoE, I enjoyed it a lot more.

We removed visible sage for the sole purpose of preventing saging as a thread down-vote. Sage is used for not bumping a thread for a whole bunch of reasons, mainly to not bump your own thread since all oldfags know a true good thread is bumped by others.
