I'm reading Animal Land right now, for the first time.
Pretty great.
What do you guys think?

Animal Land got really fucking heavy at some points. I remember reading Raiku's comment that "THAT" chapter was the hardest chapter of any work that he's ever had to draw, so he wanted to go all in with the drama this time, and I think he nailed it

Tarouza's speech after the timeskip in particular got me pretty good, too

He can't, since the king doesn't make the contest happen, some god does.
The sequel could be about him finding that god to make it stop, and the prequel could be about last time's battle.

He does, but in the end decides the battle is a good thing, a way to help the demons and humans involved grow.

Which also sugarcoats the fact that nobody knows who makes the battle happen or why. I like to think he'd have some say in the selection as king though, to prevent cases like Kolulu.

Gash Bell is a masterpiece.

Animal Land started strong then devolved into melodramatic, convoluted shonen wank after the second time skip. Gash managed to be emotional and moving _without_ killing off random characters that were introduced only a few chapters prior.

Someone translate Vector Ball already, Christ.

I dunno if I can give pass to Gash not "killing off" characters introduced a few chapters prior. That's like, Raiku's favorite move, and the most annoying part of the Faudo Arc. It brought back a bunch of characters for the 100% fight win, then book burn anyway. It got predictable after the horned one, and annoying at Barry's.

I was actually really pleasantly surprised by the lack of preachiness. There's so fucking many stories about animals living in perfect harmony until some jackass humans show up with their poisonous technology and culture and ruin everything forever, and Animal Land was absolutely not one of them.

One of the most vital lynchpins to world peace was genetically engineered fruit and vegetables with the nutritional density to sustain carnivores in a world of sapient animals and that made an astonishing amount of sense. Usually anything technologically advanced lands squarely on the "evil" side of the line and the pure pure animals and their pure pure instincts need to show everyone the way, their (perfectly natural) murderous rapist behaviors being either completely excused or never mentioned

No, it was Kodansha who asked Raiku to draw the Gash chapter to promote their new reprint. It was put in Animal Land because it wouldn't fit in the final Bunko volume.
