I think it'd hurt more if you've been in the same situation as Tsubasa, where a loved one dies. When giftias are recycled it's essentially like dying, and the whole plot seems to mirror people getting diagnosed with a terminal illness. I was thinking cancer seems the most obvious, though the end result of them kind of losing their minds makes me think of a disease like alzheimers, where loved ones cant even recognize you anymore.
