Its actually the one who causes the card to revert to its 'true form'. But that guy is right. The show plays it loose as to what constitutes 'reverting it to its true form'. Sometimes the card is always in its true form (Windy, Jump, Dash, Wood, etc) And they just award the card to whoever seems to stun or touch it first. Other cards like maze or power, they have to solve a puzzle or overpower to defeat. Which is why Shaoran got those cards.

Shaoran is being used by Eriori and has to do some bullshit thing to make Sakura lose faith in him. But then Sakura won't give up and will still love him at the end. And Shaoran will kiss her at the end of the manga.

Then 20 years later, they'll make another manga that does the same shit scenario, but leads to Shaoran proposing to Sakura.

I think at the time CCS was being animated the term "moe culture" was probably relegated to 2ch discussions. He's not really claiming it was CCS was created a vacuum, so much as being confused by the term and how it relates to CCS.

He might have been intuitively aware of various elements of moe as we understand it today, but he probably didn't think those elements as their own type of "moe product."

I'm sure the appeal was wide because the main theme is "love between any two people." It wouldn't be right for the show to not be approachable by other folks. Nevertheless, I'm sure the target audience was primarily young girls. You could say there's a focus on a wide audience, but a large spread from that target.

Well, I think of it this way. The manga for both Sailor Moon and CCS were clearly shoujo. But lots of guys ended up liking it as well (for obvious reasons). So when it came to make the anime adaptation, they decided to make it have a more general appeal. And for those two shows it worked.

Of course you have other shows like Nanoha or Pretty Sammy, which tried to do the same thing, but just ended up alienating one side or the other.

From the perspective of the creators, if your main themes deal in inclusivity it would follow logically that the story itself is approachable. The creator's idealism should rub off on their creation such that there not themes merely speaking about inclusivity. Rather, the story itself takes on a welcoming posture that doesn't alienate non-core audience members.

What attracts that non-core audience in the first place is another matter entirely. You needn't fear that you've enjoyed progressivism by accident.

It has a pretty clear connection to sentai (a type of show commonly aimed at men) as well as more focus on slice of life (which since it features cute girls obsessing over guys, would appeal to guys for self insert purposes). The fact that the girls are sexy and run around in short skirts just adds to it.

It has more going on than just shoujo themes. And focuses more on character stories than a love plot or magic. Even if a person doesn't care about the magic at all, they can still get into the show for a wide variety of things.
