Jolyne. In spite of how rough around the edges she is, she's by far the most overtly moral and justice-oriented JoJo, actively stepping in when she sees cruelty even when it doesn't concern her, and going out of her way to nurture and protect innocents like Emporio. Her motives were only ever to save her father and save the world from Pucci's batshittery, they were a lot less selfish than pretty much all the others, especially given she didn't even really know Jotaro. And when things came down to it, she knowingly sacrificed herself for Emporio without complaint or hesitation, he'd respect that.

He'd probably wish she wore more clothing and acted more ladylike, though.

Giorno is too much like DIO (he's more like Dio than he is like Jonathan) and while that wouldn't cause Jonathan to dislike him (remember that Jonathan eventually loved Dio as well) that would probably put off Jonathan as well, especially considering how Giorno is probably the JoJo that comes the closest to being a villain.

Their interactions in EOH has them notice that they feel a weird connection. Jonathan says he feels a unique pulse from Giorno and that Giorno reminds him of Dio, and Giorno says Dio is his father, asks Jonathan to tell him things about Dio, and says he feels a strange warmth near Jonathan (they never mention being technically father and son).

This may be true, but Giorno is also the most like Jonathan of any of the Joestars, and he understands on a deeper level than Dio what the meaning of sacrifice is. He doesn't want to build his path to being a force of good in the mafia world on a mountain of bodies, but he isn't afraid to spill blood.

Also, he's not most like the villain - that'd be Johnny, but even still Giorno has noble intentions and ambitions behind all of his actions in VA. That can't be said for any Jojo, not even Jolyne.

I don't see Jonathan as the type to show favoritism but, out of all the JoJos, the one who is the most like Jonathan is Jolyne (that's kind of the point of her character). They are sort of counterparts to each other in the same way Pucci is a counterpart to Dio.

They were both pure-hearted, physical combatant brawler types that none of the other JoJos were. They both started out their adventures without having superpowers and developed them as they went along. They are strong and yet vulnerable and they have a more intimate relationship with their respective villains. They both start out the story weak and flawed and become larger-than-life heroes at the end. Much like Jonathan, Jolyne is a role model, the one everyone looks up to. She is the cause of Annasui's and Foo Fighters's development. Thanks to her, Emporio grows from a wimpy kid to the one who finishes off Pucci. Jolyne repeatedly impress her companions with feats of courage and influence them to do the same, out of will to be the same as her or for her too, in the same way Jonathan inspired Speedwagon (and Joseph indirectly). The both of them even sacrificed themselves for the sake of others at the end.

Their interactions would be priceless though.

Other contestants would be Jotaro and Josuke. In spite of Jotaro's gruffness and rudeness, he loves his family more than anything and would do and sacrifice anything for them. Not to mention that he's a constant source of strength to the people around him, and it was him showing mercy and kindness to Kakyoin and Polnareff (in spite of having no motive to do so other than righteousness, both had tried to murder him) that saved two innocents and earned him allies. And when he grows up he's a lot more balanced and less rude, putting his life on the line to keep the world safe from stand bullshit.

Josuke's a simple teenager who wants to make the world immediately around him a better place. He can be a bit selfish at times, but he's a good kid that Jonathan would admire. The fact that he's got such a nice stand-ability is a reflection on his own soul, and how he just wants to help above all.

Not really. Johnny is extremely ruthless in pursuit of his goals, he kills the most out of all the JoJos without really caring that much, and he's pretty unstable, but he never really has any delusions of being a hero and he understands that he is a shithead (that's kind of what drives him forward). He still cares about his loved ones more than he did about power, he was willing to sacrifice the Corpse Parts for the sake of Gyro on more than one occasion and he almost accepted Valentine's offer to bring another Gyro to his world. He also spared the lives of characters like two of the Boom Boom family, Axl Ro and Hot Pants and didn't go out of his way to kill them.

The same can't be said for Giorno. He has noble intentions, but he operates a lot on "his" ideal of justice and what is right. If he deems you someone who deserves to die, he not only kills you, he does it painfully. He goes out of his way to kill every single enemy he was pitted agaisnt (not that they weren't trying to do the same) and he never once hesitates or questions whether or not it's worth it. He's basically Griffith from Berserk only he's a hero.

Read my post again. I pointed out it was a matter of revenge that did not involve personal protection like Josuke's revenge did.

And yet you call my understanding of these character surface-level.

Griffith was a street rat who became the greatest hero of his age, a genius who excelled at everything. But someone who carried a sense of self-loathing and a desperate desire for achievement, which is partially what fueled his dream. Giorno is the only Jojo who, while a kid, yes, also grew up wanting to be a criminal. His backstory goes into detail how, after meeting the gangster, people started to treat Giorno well, and he was respected, but that was clearly not what he wanted and he was still very much dissatisfied with the police and politics.

Much like Griffith who, no matter how far he went up the social ladder and despite all of his ambitions, still tried to retain a sense of self, Giorno, no matter how far he wanted to ascend up the criminal ladder, never once turned back agaisnt who he really was, never really tried to hide his true self (it's one of the things that makes him different from Dio).

Griffith was an idealistic and ambitious kid forced to continually compromise his ideals to pursue his big dream, developed a complicated emotional-defense mechanisms in order to remain functional in the face of overwhelming guilt and pressure, becoming emotionally and socially isolated. Giorno was an idealistic and ambitious kid trying to draw attention from the mafia to pursue his dreams, and who, only at the end of his journey, realized just how much he was way over his head.
