I am saying that the kind of things that people describe Shinbo doing in his "supervisory" role as Chief Director sound much closer to the kinds of things a Director in the film industry would be doing. You know like ensuring that all the members of your team have the same creative direction and managing them towards that goal. It isn't as if a hollywood director is storyboarding and shooting a film all by himself. There is the technical crew and director of photography for doing all that shit. When film was a smaller industry it was much more common for the director to do all of that work though, much like in the anime industry it is common now for directors to take on storyboarding and episode direction.

I really liked it, the animation at the start was beautiful and the art throughout was also nice. I liked the slow open which didn't have the MC say anything until he commented about his opponent lying at the end of their match, I don't know any of the source material but I really felt like I'd gotten a sense of the character from this first episode. Looks like there's some good things in store with the story to look forward to and the EOTE character designs are damn cute. I think this ties with Yuri as my favourite first episode of a new show this season.

First SHAFT show I can tolerate watching in a while.
They still have some very annoying Shaft-ism left in there, like pointless jump cuts or hiddeous 3Dcgi items like bottles, but it's still reasonable.
Having normal backgrounds for once really help.

Also I was glad to see my man Ryosuke Nakamura handling the ED.
