You know, a lot of people really misinterpret the whole point of that scene with Speedwagon and the effect it has on Dio's character, and act as if that scene renders all of Dio's backstory worthless.
Speedwagon is not really stating that, regardless of his upbringing, Dio is a piece of shit. He's calling him out on using his upbringing as an excuse. It's Araki establishing that there’s something to Dio that’s existentially evil, an inherent and irredeemable potential that goes beyond his upbringing (because he's the son of Dario and those evil traits are the legacy he has).
So it's not that regardless of whatever upbringing he had Dio would have been an evil piece of shit, he probably would have turned out okay if raised under less extreme circumstances with different parents, it's saying that Dio's evil runs so deep it's inexcusable for him (and the readers) to dismiss his backstory as something conditioned.

Now, as for your question about Diego, I doubt he was truly a good soul. He doesn't really have much of a backstory but we see him at a much younger age than we first saw Dio, and he was living in completely different circumstances. He seemed like a nice kid, but then again, Dio was probably a nice kid too at that age. Araki's intention with Diego wasn't to make Dio an anti-hero, it was to show that Dio could have turned out less evil if he was raised with different circumstances without the Joestars and never transcended humanity.
Diego is basically pre-vampire Dio written in more nuance. He shouldn't be compared with Adult Dio or even Vampire Dio. He should be compared with the human boy who loved his mother and killed his father and collected goons and cried when he got defeated and had an alcohol problem and whose big ambition was to steal George Joestar’s money.

Definitely agree with Sono Chi no Sadame being on top for visuals. Probably one of the best openings I've ever seen period, it's so fucking rich in detail and meaning and every single second of it is something interesting.

There are some subtleties in Stand Proud that aren't noticeable until you look hard enough. The background where the Crusaders show up is a wall full of aesthetically drawn areas based on the places they journey to get to Egypt, and the walking they due at different parts in those areas flashing by before reaching sunset in the desert is good too. At the end they flash by all the Tarot cards, representing the arc villains

But it's nothing compared to how Sono Chi no Sadame frames Phantom Blood within the walls of the Joestar Mansion in the most creative ways possible. Plus this intro flashing at you, counting back the years as the beats are sounding in the opening. It's satisfying as fuck

Just finished SBR and it's pretty bad. Action is very hard to follow, sameface intensifies, forced drama, a thousand page on this fucking rotation technique...

Jojo prides itself on accuracy. Remember how the initial series aired, and how everyone was gushing over how the manga was recreated perfectly? We loved it. Not to mention it allows a safer budget, especially for a long-runner like Jojo.

Not only is Mob a 12-episode series with a bevy of talented animators working on it who are in it for the art, but it's an adaptation. It shuffles events around to make things flow better, improves action scenes, and isn't afraid to edit things if it can exceed ONE's version. Half of /jojo/ got in an uproar when Cinderella was moved to directly after Harvest.
