Shoujo can only be good when compared to harem manga. the MC of shoujo acts more like a human then the personalityless harem MC and the male lead usually has more virtue and admirable qualities than the typical harem MC and harem. But even then shoujo has horrible problems that prevent me from liking it.

The Male leads are usually ass and sometimes even rapey. I didn't even like it when the tsundere abuses and beats the harem MC so naturally I won't be a fan when they do the same to the shoujo MC, and though they have more personality then harem girls it doesn't mean they have much of one as they still pretty much exist for the MC, so in the end you get a rapey, abusive stalker that likes the MC for no reason. The MC, being based on the audience has a tendency of being either likable, smart, strong and sympathetic or vain, stupid, useless, and whiny not two much middle ground. I know the art is suppose to be dreamy and romanticized but would it kill anyone to have at least some good proportions for their character and art designs? most of them cycle through the usual romantic soap opera cliches and series that begin good and likable like Ouran, Skip Beat, Fruits Baskets, etc. starts off good but goes in full soap opera territory in the third act. Comedies that have no business having family drama, rape, bullying, etc goes full mood whiplash for god knows what reason making sure that even if I love a shoujo series I'll hate it eventually.
