Performance based sports are my favourite and with some decent animation they have a lot of potential. Yuri on Ice is a fucking godsend. I wish Cheer Boys did cheerleading justice.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were. If anything can be seen from sports that attain large scale popularity it's that they tend to draw in the worst sorts. Cricket exists in a nice place where it's a quaint game, there's no hoodlums, there's no rioting, it's perfectly civil and welcoming to people to want to become interested in it but not so big as to try and draw in everyone and built on massive advertising budgets. It's current state is ideal.

I think the decathlon would make for a good setup. You'd have a bunch of characters ultimately aiming for the Olympics, starting out in high school and you're set for a long running series. Varying disciplines warrant a clash of various characters, ranging from the gifted to hard workers, from all-rounders to specialists, with plenty of potential for drama surrounding adding up points across all disciplines to go for the top. Also, you can have it cover both men and women for some relationship hijinks.

I'm kinda surprised there aren't any well known sports series concerning track and field, or maybe I haven't found them yet.
