We're eventually going back to the present given OP's pic is promo art released by BONES and the characters are all from the Guild, the villains introduced at the end of last season. Not to mention the trailers they released for each of the named Guild members

Was a pretty great ep. Since this time show won't have to spend half of its time introducing the supporting cast and it's abilities, it can be a substantial improvement over the first cour, that is if the source material doesn't suck.

It's an adaptation of the second light novel, which isn't as shit as the earlier chapters. A lot of fans have been craving for it and BONES listened. The last light novel was poorly done so the improvement is a nice surprise.
