Definitely. The characters take a bit of warming up to but once it gets rolling, the series is a lot of fun. The CG is surprisingly nice during the battles and the choreography for a few of them is top notch. If you like mecha action and don't mind Hiraiface, definitely.

The plot itself is very standard. Aliens invade, humans fight them back. It doesn't really rely on any kind of twists, gimmicks, or trainwreck behavior like a lot of other modern mecha tries to do. But that's sort of its own gimmick, I suppose.

It really depends on how much you end up liking the characters, which carry the brunt of the show.

I'll be honest, the first half of the show is like between passable and maybe-not-passable. It doesn't hit its stride until pretty late when it goes full tilt into the characters. The early parts have character interactions too but really lack the growth and rounding that happens much later. Its serviceable because its fairly lighthearted.

Gargantia loses in a lot of ways. After the first couple episodes it becomes SoL on the ship. If you like SoL or acclimate to that after SENMETSU it's still not that good compared to other SoL. Then it stops being SoL in the last episodes for the TWEEST(S) and the final confrontations. This all in the span of 13 episodes so it never really feels cohesive tonally and doesn't really explore any of its ideas in a really meaningful way, to the point where people still don't realize that chamber's big speech about human advancement was intended to be thematically ironic and hypocritical.

I still prefer gifs. webm runs like shit on my computer, and it doesn't have that special feel that gifs do. Why is this series so fun to watch? Even though it's a pretty simple themed and almost generic story, it's more enjoyable than most anime from the last 5-6 years. This episode itself was probably better than anything from the last two seasons this year.

It's BECAUSE it's a simple almost generic story. It's not trying to be some pseudo deep psychological affair, it's not trying to to reinterpret or deconstruct the genre.

It knows exactly what it wants to do and it does it taking the time to tell things properly and endear the characters to us. And it's not afraid to be fun while doing it.

What I think I love is how, well, RATIONAL the adults are.

Yeah shit's fucked and we need teenagers to pilot the mechs to save the day but the adult characters like Amane, Rin^2 and even Commander Simon aren't assholes. The only adult who was an asshole quickly got demoted so Amane could take over because she's actually good at this shit.

It's just really nice to see the Rabbits have people in their corner who aren't treating them like disposable pawns which easily could have been the case.

The Pit Crews where great. They didn't get too much screen time or characterization really but just knowing they where their to pick the bunnies up was exactly what I was just saying. There's a real sense that people care about them that really appreciate.

I think my favorite one was early one. Rin is almost forced to order the others to leave Red 5 behind. She manages to stay composed during the mission but once she and Reika are alone she completely breaks down over the thought of losing one of her rabbits.

The competent caring adults/support and the overall lighthearted interactions probably were what kept me going through the early episodes. Rabbit team's incompetence was sort of refreshing, but not really enough on it's own to make the show interesting and I feel that a lot of the early action scenes felt sort of rote and boring due to the show's cliche premise and setting. It's not until after Rabbit team really gets it together in terms of teamwork and how they get fleshed out as characters do you start to really feel for the importance of each engagement so I'm not sure whether the action actually got better or whether having that emotional base made them feel less by-the-numbers.
