The fight between Leviathan + Belphagor vs Rudolf + Kyrie is still my favorite in the series.

It shed a lot of light into how thoroughly fucked up Kyrie was. It was also the first time that Ushiromiya family members managed to successfully fight off the fantasy creatures and survive. It also had some great music playing through the whole thing.

A very close second favorite was Battler vs Beatrice at the end of Episode 4 with dreamenddischarger playing.

The Higurashi anime was somewhat decent, but the Visual Novel is far superior. I'd recommend reading it.

Umineko has several references back to Higurashi. They aren't really important or anything and were more like "easter eggs" for people who were familiar with Higurashi, so you could read Umineko without reading Higurashi first.

That said, I'd still highly recommend reading Higurashi first. Then read Umineko, then read the Umineko manga. You can also watch some of the Higurashi OVA's or the Outbreak movie which involve alternate "what if" scenarios Ryukishi wrote but never included in the Visual Novels.

It's quite different in that there's no mystery element. And it's like a collection of interconnected short stories. There's continuity and reoccurring characters but there's no greater plot.
It's kind of a nice change of pace, I'd have loved a single Higanbana story but this way is pretty fun too.
Tone wise Higanbana takes the dark comedy of the previous titles and turns in up to 11. It's fucking dark, and super funny at the exact same time. So if you liked that about Umineko, Higan is all about that.

So in the end it isn't nearly as ambitious or powerful as the others but it's still very fun and worth the read.
Definatley finish Umineko already though, everyone keeps stopping on the last episode when you should really just finish it. There's a riddle solving mechanic that's a blast to play(was for me anyways).

Not really. Higurashi was also insanely lewd. K1 was talking about his dick and sex, Mion smuggling him in her bosom, then there's a part in ep 8 where Rena is tied up in BDSM ropes. To be honest I really like Higanbana. It doesn't have any real mystery to it. Instead it's a series of small short stories that deal with people facing all sorts of different forms of bullying at school.

There are also the school yokai, spirits who eat people's souls and many of them engage or assist the bullies or victims in order to get souls.

It's actually very dark and depressing but it still has moments of hope. Some of the stories were definitely better than others, but all of them were good in their own ways.

I think it's probably the epitome of Ryukishi's writing if only because since each story is so short, it really let his better attributes and abilities as a writer shine, while at the same time being able to avoid some of the problems that arise from his style.

I'd highly recommend it.

That story was basically just Ryukishi writing about himself and BT and trying to get over his best friend's death. Kumasawa probably didn't want to tell Yasu because she felt it would do more harm than good. In fact, if we look back at Episode 3's opening it shows Virgila talking with Beatrice 2 about using magic to restore the broken vase. I think we can interpret it as Kumasawa using "magic" to help Beatrice 2 cope with that situation. In the same way, Kumasawa probably wanted to do the same thing with Yasu, though she did have the best intentions, it hurt more than it helped. As for Nanjo, well, if I could speculate, he probably felt guilty too about Yasu's situation. Perhaps he felt that if he told Yasu the truth, he would be responsible for it, because he was the person responsible for restoring Yasu back to life. He probably didn't know how to tell Yasu, or terrified at how he would react.

They all only tell Yasu the truth once they are forced to.
