Anyone can explain the idiom for me?

If translated, it goes along the way of "one's stomach is standing", which means that the person is pretty angry. I do understand the word-for-word transliteration but I really don't get the context behind it

Not sure, something like someone saying their memory was limited certain way. Maybe they can learn certain things well but not others, so that could be a response to someone being impressed by their knowledge, and the other person explaining how they aren't like that across the board.
Picture someone being able to memorise strings of numbers and them explaining that that's pretty much all they can do.

I got over that a long time ago. Been listening to ASMR for several years now, and now I find these kinds of roleplays the next best thing after 2D girls.

>>148120918
It's a moderately big thing in the West as well (seriously, just look up ASMR on youtube, there are millions of videos). But as usual, it's the Japanese who do it right, with their girlfriend roleplays and ecchi/ero audios. They sell them at stores like DLsite too.

Japanese is beginning to seem impossible for me. I spent 4 hours today trying to read how to use に対して、について、とおり、代わりに、に関して, にかける、ごとに yet i feel like i know nothing about them all or rather i dont have a natural feel for them. I started to hate all these online guides with their limited vocab and one sentence examples. So then I tried picking up something raw, like manga. And holy shit, manga uses all these new words ive never seen before, but i still have not come across any of these grammar points ive been studying. I hate having to use kanjitomo every 5 seconds. I dont know how to properly study, and now im stressed about the jlpt. 助けて

Stop reading grammar for the sake of it and just read something interesting and look up the grammar and vocab you encounter. You will gradually understand more and more. The real way to learn is comprehensible input. Learning grammar is not language acquisition.

Shirokuma Cafe is a good beginner anime, because people generally speak slowly and there are often pauses in between sentences so you can process what you just heard. Also, it's good. I find the pace of the dialogue is the number one thing that makes most native materials too hard to listen to. After that it's how much of the vocabulary is familiar.

Not really? Sometimes they cut their sentences at weird places, but it's still not a big problem when you have the whole lyrics in front of your eyes.

Thoughts on dropping core6k and just going pure mining?

I'm at around 2200 in core and 3000 mining vocab, and it really feels like the effort that goes into core just isn't worth it. With no attachment to the words that you're being shown and their tendency to throw like 5 similar looking/meaning jukugo at you at once, it takes like 3 times the effort to memorize them and just isn't fun.

Of course I've already made up my mind as I was typing this, but I'm just curious as to what you guys have done.
>>
>>148133849
I only listen to Vocaloid songs when of of my favorite singers has made a cover (Yoppei, Hanatan, Gurutamin...) because I don't like the synthetic voices of the original character (I have exceptions, but they are rare)
And yes this song is nice, it's also a good one for pronunciation training, I've been working on it for one week and I nearly can sing it now. You should try, I think karaoke is an excellent tool too.

流縷々涙止めそかねつる。
I get as far as 止め, but then don't understand what the そか is here; likewise with ねつる. As just ねつ it would be fever, but with the る tacked on it's nothing. ねつるい would be "hot tears" which makes sense in the context of the line and all, but no edition of the lyrics has that い at the end.

Ah, I'm the poster that originally asked the question. >>
>>148139477
Yes it's me. I went to Japan just after I graduated from the University and immediately started to work as a translator in a little IT company (I also learned web design there because they knew I love to draw and saw a use for my skills there. As a result I can use GoLive in Japanese, which looks great on a resume). As I needed extra money I started to work in a convenience store at the same time (A Lawson) and discovered that I love that branch and to be in contact with a lot of clients. As I found that there were a lot of places searching for caregivers and because in Japan you don't need a qualification to become one, I quit my job and started to work in a retirement home for elders with dementia (and also a mental hospital but that was hell, so I quit after 1 year). The big advantage was that the terms are everywhere the same when it comes with caretaking in Japan: at least 150.000/month from the very first month plus the full social cover and a lot of bonuses (not mentioning the possibility to do extremely well paid night shifts). After 3 years of experience you can get your qualification, which I have now. Actually I'm half working in that retirement home and in a supermarket. First job gives me the full social cover without the extra long hours full time employees have to do, and the second one is just a complement that fills most of my off days. I'm now 42 and I can do whatever I want with my two shifts while earning quite a lot for a single woman, I guess. And have a long term resident visa. I'm perfectly happy with my life (and japanese elders are simply adorable)

I don't read LNs. I tried, seeing how popular some were here but I can't help thinking Japanese express themselves much better and more 'colorfully' through animation.
Till a few years ago I was addicted to dojin novels though.
I think I've watched or at least tried to watch everything a/ was talking about, but at my age, I find it more and more difficult to take any kind of interest into child or adolescent character's lives.
The last show I tried to watch was 91 days, but it wasn't mature enough for me. Well, it's hard to find anything as rich as Monster... So now I only read very old manga in japanese mangakissas. The ones so old the pages are yellowish. A lot of cooking, sports or mafia centered mangas, in fact. Realistic mangas like医竜. This one is a gem. At least to my eyes.
When it comes with music, my tastes are very eclectic. Lots of popular things you'll heard about also here, and obscure things I found totally by chance, like covers of Vocaloid songs by good amateur japanese singers. I can't recommend anything there. But it's the same for everything else, it's my tastes after all.

>俺が本当のオマエを見ててやるから

Does anyone know what 見ててやる is meant to mean exactly? From what I can gather -てやる is 'to do (verb) for someone of lower status' but doesn't make much sense when used with 見る
>>
>>148144126
見ていて (to be watching) やる (I will)
I'll be watching your real self from now on.

Think of the やる suffix as an assertive "I'll do".

殺してやる
>>
>>148144126
Also, to add to this, 見る can also have the "protecting you" nuance, especially here.

"Look out for" kinda way.

Got it all now?

>Think of the やる suffix as an assertive "I'll do".

Well yeah I posted that since I found a grammar page explaining that, but seemed to not make much sense with 本当のオマエを, if it was just オマエを sure, but "I'll be watching over your real/true self"? Weird.

Well Ainu is a spoken language, there is no written alphabet for it, and there are only two native speakers left in the world, so it's going to be HARD to ask them....

http://www.endangeredlanguages.com/lang/1212

You better ask fast before the language totally dies.
And by the way, there is japanese DNA that only exists in Japan, so no, Chinese or Koreans aren't their ancestors.

"Y-DNA haplogroup D2, making up 36% of the Japanese male lineages, is interesting because it is only found in Japan. Its closest relatives are scattered around very specific regions of Asia : the Andaman Islands (between India and Myanmar), Indonesia (only a small minority), Southwest China (mostly among the Qiang ethnic group), Mongolia (also a small minority) and Tibet. Haplogroup D is thought to have originated in East Africa some 50,000 years before present. The first carriers of the gene would have migrated along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, through Indonesia, and gone up to Japan, South-East Siberia, then moved inland to Mongolia, with the last part of the group continuing as far as Tibet. However, whereas the Japanese belong to haplogroup D2, Tibetans are part of the completely separate D3a, the Qiang of D1, and the Andaman Islanders of D*. It means that their most recent common ancestors goes back tens of thousands of years. In other words the genetic gap between these ethnic groups is immense, despite false appearances of belonging to a common haplogroup."

"Visualizing Japanese Grammar" by Shoko Hamano
https://www2.gwu.edu/~eall/vjgnew/vjghomepage/vjghome.htm

This very very wonderful resource -- oddly enough-- is not included in the DJT Neocities site's resources list. For example, it covers the particle 'wa' in a very lucid way which Tae Kim may not be able to. Furthermore, it has quiz exercises for each grammar concept, which is a great help in reinforcing the concept tackled. Everyone should not miss out on this exceptional resource.

Side note: I am ripping the video lessons in the site for data archival. I will upload them altogether in a zip file on Mega for anyone who wants and so that we have an online archive of it.

Example:
時の経つは早いです。vs 時間の経つ早いです。
一緒に宿題をやろう。vs 一緒に宿題をしよう。
六日前に日本に「帰ってきました」。 vs 戻ってしまった

I am lost. It makes me question if I can learn Japanese by continuing in this way with Anki reps.

I wonder if that is really true. In reading, it often happens that you eventually have to look up a new word, which eventually launches you to get lost in ambiguity over the multiple meanings of just one word.

But to follow your train of thought, what should I read then for example?

No, I flipped that card up for another deck, where I get to practice drawing out Japanese words instead of the vice versa. Cause my target is to produce more than anything.

Well, I guess this is one solution to my problem. Cause I go crazy when I find a discrepancy between the English and Japanese sentences lol. When I do my flipped cards deck, I try to translate the English sentences into Japanese as how I would say it personally to act as a practice for my production. But of course, they Jp sentences just contradicts my production and screws me over entirely.

Whatever you say. I'm not waiting till you create a third persona to be two against one. We all know how people like you work.

You could also edit all the sentences to your liking if you want to continue doing flipped cards.
Anki is just a tool, get the best out of it.

I edit some of my core cards when they are ambiguous, for example by adding (suffix) to the front to know what it wants from me.
