I think the difference is that Vegeta is not pretentious. There's no illusion of depth. He just wants to be the bad man. He wants to beat Goku. There's no "MY DESIRE IS NOBLE", no "TRAGEDY LED ME DOWN THIS PATH". Just a megalomaniac hungry to be #1.

If anything, the depth comes along after he stops being an edgelord.
