It was painfully mediocre, which still puts it far ahead of the trainwreck that was Chaos;Head, but when the gold standard of adaptations in your VN franchise is as downright excellent as Steins;Gate, it definitely feels like a disappointment.

The anime just didn't seem focused at all. It meandered far too often, the pacing was sluggish, and it didn't even feel like a real story. The only thing that saves it from being completely unwatchable are the characters.

The plot was lacking, especially near the later episodes but it was an OK binge watch series

It's a shame how they dropped the ball with R;N.
