Does Anki have a subliminal system apart from simply spacing?

Sometimes a really mature card shows up and, later in reviewing, I find out the new cards all use this coincidentally reviewed kanji.

The spacing itself couldn't have been calculated because there were flunks in-between, but there could very well be some hidden variable telling "HEY, give card X priority in reviews when card Y is scheduled for learning".

All I know is, if you have similar cards it should bury them and not show them in the same session.

I think that's only the case for reverse cards and stuff like that. The rest depends on your deck order.

In core for example there's often a ton of words using almost the same kanji in a row.
