When are you too old to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Is it ever too late to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Has anyone of you watched NGE for the first time when you were 20 or older?
>>
I was too old to enjoy it when I first saw it at 17. Nobody should enjoy it past around 24.
>>
I watched it for the first time this year, I'm 20 years old.
>>
>>147631404
Have you ever admitted you watched it to any of your peers?

>>
>>147631522
I mean, there's certainly stuff to enjoy about it, but it's very much a show about a young kid having juvenile teen angst type problems.
>>
>>147631770
Wrapped in a bunch of stylistic noise, I should say.
>>
>>147631192
Watched it at 22 and could definitely appreciate what it did.
>>
I watched it when I was 17 and thought it was good, but didn't fully understand it.

Rewatched it last year and loved it. Definitely one of the best anime of all time.
>>
>>147631192
Watched it this year before I turn 21
>>
>>147631192
I think I was 19 when I first watched it. I'm in the middle of a rewatch right now. It's still good.
>>
>>147631192
I watched it for the first time at 26. It was fine. It's not as good nor as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

If you're a well-read adult, you're going to find that Anno didn't do anything special. He just applied concepts that have existed in other mediums for decades to anime. That's not a bad thing, but it doesn't make him a genius like Evafags claim.

Also, if you're a socially well-adjusted adult the theme may not resonate with you unless you were awkward as a teen or have some perspective.
>>
What kind of a retarded question is this? Why should age make any difference as to when you watch a show? Only a teenager (or someone trapped in that mindset) would care two bits about age.

I didn't start watching anime in general until I was in my 20's. Didn't see Eva until I was 24 or so. It's a timeless classic that anyone can watch and enjoy, and a must watch for anyone who cares about animation in general.

I get what you are saying

The thing is I started watching anime during the last 2 years.

I watched things like Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Memories, Kon's films and some films from Miyazaki, like Nausicaa (when I was young I watched only one scene, a girl on a blue dress running away from a giant bug, that's the scene that stuck in my mind and made me search anime) and I loved them all

I admit that NGE has amazing animation and style and I'm still amazed at the quality of Hideaki Anno's animation in Nausicaa but I'm afraid I won't get it because it's made for a younger audience

Damn, I've lost the best anime years

>>
You're already too old to watch anime if you're 18.
>>
>>147631192
Watched it at 20. It was great.
>>
I watched it age 20 during some fairly serious depression. I'm 23 now and I've rewatched it a few times and the messages still run true.

I don't think it's necessarily for the 15-18 audience, it's also something to make to reflect back on. I watch it and think, well, at least I wasn't as much of a sperg as Shinji.
>>
>>147632418
Cute strawman. There's some kids that could easily handle and appreciate R-rated shows, depending on the show. My parents forced me to watch Saving Private Ryan when I was about that age, for example. Obviously it's a parent's responsibility to watch out for their kids and monitor what they shouldn't be getting into, but once you're an adult literally who cares.
>>
you'll be fine. I watched it for the first time when i was 17 or 18 and it became (and still remains) in my top 5

NGE is wrapped up in so much positive and negative hype but every time I see portions of it I get the feeling there is real art, passion and creativity in there

Fuck man. I don't want to have this parenting argument with anyone. Let alone an /a/non who will probably never have children.

I was young once. I said the same things you're saying now. Now that I'm in my 30s I realize I was retarded. Young children and teenagers are not the same as adults nor will they ever be.

This guy >>147633245 makes a good point. If you're interested, just go watch it.

At the end of the day, you're just going to waste your time watching something else instead, right? Even if you don't like Eva when its all said and done, at least you'll have some understanding of the show and the memes when others talk about it. That's worth something. I think that you'll take something away from it though. It's fun to watch even if only as a learning experience.

If you're going to do something actually productive with your time, well...Probably get off /a/ and do that.
>>
>>147632638
I think the point is that the context in which you first view something will obviously affect your opinion on it. Youre seriously asking why would watching something as a 14 year old be different than watching it as a 28 year old?

Because antidepressants are one of the worst scams in history, and only make things worse.

Actually, thinking about it, just imagine how deeper into the shitter everything would have gone if they DID give Shinji antidepressants...
>>
>>147633105
Instead of wondering if it's an acceptable thing to watch because you're "too much of an adult" or something why not go watch it?

I'm not trying to be a cunt, but you look a lot less mature then you're saying you are by being so concerned with whether or not NGE is age appropriate. Anime is not the medium for you if you get hung up on things like that.
>>
>>147631192
I watched it when I was 23 and I thought it was good. The End of Evangelion left a bigger impression on me than the series did, and is one of my favorite anime movies.
>>
I unironically believe that Evangelion is the greatest piece of fiction ever created by mankind, and I watched for the first time at 14.

Take that as you will
>>
>>147633517
I'm not saying I'm too much of an adult, sorry if that's how I came through

I'm just skeptical, like I was skeptical when I started seeing Nausicaa based on a memory of a scene from when I was young but then I was blown away by the awesomeness and made me watch more anime and I loved them all

NGE is going to be my first anime series (because I can't watch EOE with watching NGE first, right?) so I'm skeptical. Hopefully I'll be blown away again

(now that I read my question again I come out as very insecure, that's true I am)
>>
>>147633264
I never said that. What I did say is that people are different, and there are -some- kids who could appreciate -some- adult-oriented shows. Not every kid, not every show. Not even most kids or most shows. It's up to parents to know when those rare exceptions might be.
Besides, this entire discussion is the exact opposite direction of my original statement - that adults shouldn't care two bits about what age something was or was not made for.
>>
>>147631192
I first watched it when I was 22. I think it's very good. No masterpiece, but definitely not bad.

It's not about age, but age relative to its release date. If you've watched Eva for the first time post 2009, you're undoubtedly a) underage b&, or b) a crossposting newfag with abysmal shit taste, or c) both. You have no business being on /a/, much less even coming near the medium.
>>
>>147633789
Hehehehe oh boy, you'll be blown away alright. In ways you probably can't realize right now. Not sure if it's the perfect example or the worst example for someone's first anime series ever. Definitely one of the most important and influential series ever made.

EOE is a direct sequel to the series yeah, so you have to watch it afterwards. Make sure you get the Director's Cut, which extends episodes 21-24 by a few minutes each. Virtually every copy of it nowadays is that version though.
>>
>>147633509
I had a similar conversation with my therapist when I told her that whatever is wrong with me I don't want antidepressant or any drugs like that

When she asked me why I told her I want to get better but I want to continue to be me and not loose my self on antidepressants or get hooked on them

She said but anon, it's science, don't you trust pharmaceutical companies and I said no, I don't trust them and I don't want any antidepressants

Thankfully we dropped the subject and I don't need them
>>
>>147634076
Yeah that was my intention. Thought it was clear from the conversation's context, guess not. My bad.
>>
>>147631192

>still no 3.0 + 1.0
>it's probably never happening

I'm still fucking angry about 3.33. I just want to see Shinji sock Misato and Gendo in the faces and tell them both to fuck off. I don't even care what happens after that; just give me the satisfaction of seeing Shinji deck both of them.

>>
>>147631192

Watched it the first time around 15, immediately after watching TTGL. Gave up halfway, hated NGE cause it didn't have the epic robot fights or waifus I wanted more of

Rewatched it at 23, loved it. Ignoring the 2deep4u BS, I appreciated how effort was made to make almost every character in the show more than one-dimensional

If anything, it's something you appreciate the older you get
>>
>>147634190
Apparently production's back on track. Anno released a statement a little bit ago apologizing for delaying 3.0+1.0 to do Shin Godzilla, but said it was exactly the break he needed emotionally to get back to working on Eva. He loves the series, but it's extremely draining on him to work on it.
>>
>>147634334

If it ends on some bullshit note instead of nice closure, I'm going to be furious. Any sort of cliffhanger or "to be continued" shit will drive me up the wall.

Does this look like the face of a man who would torment you so?
>>
>>147634532

Yes, it does.

Shinji's behavior angers me to no end. I get that he's a kid being thrown into a death machine made out of his own mother, but some of his decisions just were so bumfuck stupid:

>2.22 with EVA03 going Angel
>instead of going "OK Dad how do we beat the shit out of this thing without killing Asuka", he just bitches and moans

>3.33 with Misato
>instead of going "cut the crap woman what the FUCK is going on here?" or even defending himself from the hatred pointed at him (such as saying I wasn't even conscious during all of that AND you specifically cheered me on to do it", he just sits there slack jawed
>doesn't stop when Kaworu warns him about the spears
>doesn't try to talk it out with Asuka
>>
>>147634688

Agree with you on all parts but the last two.

After seeing how the world's broke up and it's all his fault, Shinji feels a fuckton of guilt. Cocktease Kaworu promises him a magical fix, like "hey dude just go grab dem spears", and Shinji desperately believes in that promise, shutting out anyone who tries to talk him out of it
>>

I disagree. Much of the show delves into the other character's hangups and insecurities, particularly Misato's and (to a lesser extent) Gendo's and Ritsuko's. I feel the show's more about how the people as a whole cope with living in the world full of depression, destruction and loss that is NGE (Why'd you think so few people rejected instrumentality?)
We just happen to see it through the eyes of a 14 year old with the power to change it.

I'm 22 and watched it for the first time this summer. Was really surprised I hadn't watched before. Really weirded out at first but it kept me intrigued until the very end.

And I don't think there's an age limit on this type of show, it's pretty mature sci/fi shit despite being about emotionally unstable adolescents

Anybody saying that you cannot enjoy it at any age is retarded. We are talking about the best anime ever made here, people. If you can appreciate that, you will be able to appreciate its message, characters, story, soundtrack, voice acting, and incredible visuals no matter how old you become, not to mention the enormous impact that it had on Japanese culture as a whole. You can argue that it's best to enjoy it as a child, because that makes it easier to relate to Shonji's problems as a protagonist, but there is no question that Evangelion is a timeless anime.
