The only anime girl I know of to meet a former President of the United States.

I, like many of you, suffer from problems. My problems don't involve any of your implausible ones, but mine are worth voicing to you in hope of getting some advice. Anyways, I began to watch Azumanga Daioh about a month ago, and as I dove deeper and deeper into the series, the more and more I fapped to hentai of it. I continued to do so until the last episode. Then I watched the series again...and again... and again... I found myself checking out Osaka every on-screen moment she had. I began to stop going to my regular sites just to look at hentai of one person: Osaka. I eventually had 1000s of pictures and some doujins of Osaka. I began to spend what others called absurd amounts of money on merchandise, and my apartment is coated with Osaka everywhere. I've shut myself off from family and friends and felt an urge to just snuggle with my Osaka dolls. Osaka is all I need. She probably wouldn't like the way my family is or how my friends behave. I'm in love with Osaka. I keep praying that she'll come to see me one day and decide to live with me. I have nothing left to live for but Osaka. I know she can hear me, so I always talk to her telling her to come and visit me so our union can take place. So this is where you guys come into the picture. You're an all-purpose advice board. You definitely must know a way to help Osaka break free from behind her glass prison. Please help! She's my perfect girl, and she's longing for me as much as I long for her.

I like the earlier style too. I didn't enjoy seeing so much changed in the 10th anni. manga. The Yotsuba style is nice, and suits that series, but I like the old Azu the most.

あずまんが大王 is probably one of the few manga series that simply does not translate without completely butchering what makes the characters interesting. I will never get how /a/ is content to rip on English dubs for anime yet see nothing wrong with reading translated manga, which is the same thing: you aren't reading what the mangaka wrote, you're reading what someone else wrote, often by amateurs who shouldn't be interpreting creative works in the first place.

Naturally, plenty gets lost in translations and unless you do understand the culture you probably won't get many references that almsot any medium uses, at least to a certain degree, so in a sense consuming translated media while feeling smug about your superiority is ridiculous, though that doesn't automatically mean that saying subs>dubs is a vacuus argument.

But would also like to add that it doesn't really matter. Azumanga is actually quite funny even translated. I actually couldn't make it all the way through the anime because the 4koma is so much more enjoyable. Localization has always been a part of translating. Its no reason to dislike a character.

The dub was fine. Azumanga Daioh's comedy is all about delivery, don't pretend for a second that reading jokes as text is the same thing as hearing them spoken by the characters in a language you understand.

They translated it correctly, and turned a shitty joke about a dude nobody outside of Japan really understands the culture behind into a joke perfect for the audience of "people watching anime in English". Are you seriously attempting to imply it would have been better if they left a shitty joke the audience would never understand in the series?

The ONE joke in Azumanga Daioh you can complain about with dubbing is the double entendre penis pun, and even that is a single joke that can't really get translated outside of TL notes.

That's the correct course of action, there's no point in translating something if you half ass it and don't bother making it something that the target audience can understand.

Don't pretend for a second the dub would be better if they kept the FPM Mori joke, because all that would do is confuse English viewers and make a funny scene confusing instead of funny. If you know FPM Mori and all of the cultural significance behind him, you should know enough Japanese to watch the series without needing subs for most of it.

There is no legitimate reason why you need need simple, relaxing, slice of life shows to be in a language you don't understand. Isn't having to read the translation of the show the exact opposite of simple and relaxing? You can't just sit back and relax and zone out if you have to read everything, it isn't a book it's a comedy SOL.

If the dub was bad that's completely different, but Azumanga Daioh has a pretty good dub.
