I'm a Jap-American who studied at Tokyo Tech, but we're kind of forced to learn a language to "boost our job prospects overseas." German was popular, but English was the clear-off most popular one.

The funny thing though is that at Tokyo Tech, German was seen as easy because we expected to have teachers who weren't good at speaking German (i.e. Japanese guys who studied German as opposed to English teachers who were actually Americans).
